  I finally got the Malossi BBK that I had been waiting on yesterday. I tore down the motor last night and was surprised at the condition of the piston on the previous kit. It had huge pits in the walls of it! It appeared as if it was flaws in the metal itself and not from wear. Rings=trashed. :( I knew it wasn't the same after the soft seize.
  I took care to clear the previous gasket material off and do a visual check of the crank case. I covered the rings, pin, cylinder wall with oil. Everything seemed to go together well. I only had time for a short test run last night as it was nearly 2am by the time I finished. It seemed to be running on the rich side. I'll tackle that problem today if the weather holds out. Strong storms and tornadoes in the forecast.
  I may be splitting my time between here and another forum after this weekend. I'm taking a little road trip on Saturday to pick myself up a brand new 2013 Aprillia SR 50. Good times are in my future. :) I plan on keeping my Like and giving it to the wife.

My Like blows it away...for now. But the SR corners like a sport bike and drives like a dream. It just has some shortfalls on performance. When I'm done with it, it will be a

At my midway point yesterday, I was at a little less than a half a tank. :) As for the ape... BBK, street gearing, remapped ecu, all new transmission. All Malossi.
Well, the dash doesn't lie...Although I could probably squeeze another 5mph out of it after I break it in.

A few queries regarding the Like:
You had indicated that the Malossi kit went in without having to perform any modifications (other than "cleaning up" any casting impurities). Was that definitely the case?
Did you get/install carbon fiber reeds? I know they were going to come with the Athena kit, but didn't know if you got some for the Malossi kit.
Was there any improvement with the Naraku cdi? Also, did you stay with the stock mani intake?

With the Malossi BBK, I had very little cleaning as the jug appeared nearly perfect. Only a couple of spots that I had to get at with the dremel. It came with reeds, but they did not match the OEM reeds at all, so I left them out. As for the intake and reeds, they are all still original. That is the only thing left to add to my project. For some reason, they never shipped the Naraku CDI. I didn't get charged, so I never bothered with it. Right now I'm happy with it, so it a case of 'if it's not broke, don't fix it'.
