I can't believe how well this thing goes. If the variator is changed, will I need to change the v belt as well ?

Certainly sounds like a short to ground. My schematic shows only the blinker, handlebar switch, 4 turn bulbsgood advice here, sounds like a definite short. Have a look at your regulator rectifier connections too though. I'd also check the connection from battery to earth(frame) and engine earth to frame
and dash indicator in the circuit. Try putting a meter on the power somewhere and run the flashers. See if the
voltage is varying. Elsewise look around for some wires rubbing. My old bike had problems around the headset
and rear shock adjuster.
You might need to remove the flasher and all 4 bulbs and meter the wires to ground. Good luck!
It just occurred to me it might be a bad connection. Check the battery terminals and the 3 yellow wires
from the stator. The battery could be loose and causing low power available (blinkers use 40 watts!).
And stator wires are known to melt and corrode causing poor charging...
