Starting problem
« on: May 20, 2012, 12:07:31 AM »
My 2011 has 600 miles and is not starting reliably.  When hold the left brake and press the start button, it makes a noise like a solenoid is engaging but the starter is not turning.  After a half dozen attempts it usually starts.  Any ideas please?  It make like a small clunk hoise but doesnt turn over,  than after hitting the starter button over and over it turns over and starts.  Not making me want to go anywhere and be stranded.

If you bought it new, warranty will fix the problem. See your local dealer.  As for the cause... shorted wire, bad relay, starter going bad, etc.

could be the starter solenoid, but, clean the battery and starter connections first, charge battery then try starting again.

I bought it used.  The battery voltage is 12v with no load and 11.55v with the key on and lights on.  It's a 2011 model so is the battery under warranty since I bought the scooter used ?

The warranty is not transferable from the original owner to you, but you definitely need to replace the battery.

It is a bad solenoid. If it clunks that means it is energizing, but not flowing current thru the contacts. Check your yellow pages for a starter rebuild shop, and have it rebuilt for 1/3rd the cost of new.

Ps   Check the battery cable too. It may be bad/loose at the starter.

The warranty on these are not transferable. So no, you don't have a warranty.

Fully charge your battery before attempting to use it, otherwise you can damage it or decrease its longevity. Once your battery is fully charged and you have checked all connections, you should be OK.  If you still have the problem, now it will be even easier to pinpoint since you eliminated the battery and the connections.

For your previous battery, a voltage of 11.5v means it was down to 20%.  Here's a little breakdown...

12.6v or higher - Fully Charged
12.5v - 90%
12.42v - 80%
12.32v - 70%
12.2v - 60%
12.06v - 50%
11.9v - 40%
11.75v - 30%
11.58v - 20%
11.31v - 10%
10.5v - Bone Dead

Starter connections are tight new fully charged battery 13v and still klunks a few times then starts.  Very repeatable.  What is transferable under warranty?

Its a 2011.  Is it under warranty?  I just bought the scooter used.  Are there any docs on the web on how to remove the starter?  Is the solenoid separate from the starter?  How to remove it to test please ?

Try it thru the seat pan. Usually that gives the most access. Plastics are a puzzle
