Technical | How To / Running help
« on: April 28, 2011, 10:04:30 PM »
This regulator part ive orderd still hasnt arrived from the kymco dealership and with this royal wedding (i live in england) that no one is arsed about its gonna take even longer to turn up, so ive decided to put it back together for the time being.

So I was just wondering if I can run my scooter with no Regulator in it? Im sure the Alternator is wired into the regulator and wont charge the battery if it is in place, so would it be okay to run my scooter with this part missing? I know it runs fine without it but would it cause any damage?

Cheers

Technical | How To / Super 8 Rectifier
« on: April 19, 2011, 07:53:31 PM »
Just a few questions :)

Is the rectifier the unit in the front of the bike with a sort of heat sink on the top and a black connector?
If it is its the cause of my bike nearly catching fire, theres lots of black/brown gooey stuff leaking from it and the red wire going into it has melted (thanks to me) if i replaced this and the wire is there anychance of it blowning my fuses again?

Thanks :D

Super 8 / Bike Caught Fire!
« on: April 19, 2011, 04:46:04 PM »
Brilliant this isnt it, the other day i was on my bike when my dash and all electrics died, luckily with my handy tool kit you get with this bike i noticed it was a fuse, but the case holding the fuse had a hole burnt through it and i noticed that the (red) wire fuse was dangerously close to the negative terminal, which i can only imagine its arked and burnt a hole through the casing, so I changed the fuse and its been fine for 2 -3 days.

Got it out before ready to go out and all my dash was dead again (fuse) and there was no more fuses in my battery compartment, so like a dickhead i just put the two metal wires together and NEARLY set off to get a 10A fuse. Looked up and there was smoke pouring out the front of my ped, so i turned the engine off and it carried on, took off the battery casing and there was the red wire melting in front of me, after taking off the terminals from the battery id realised now (because me scooters in pieces) that the red wire has melted all through the wiring loom.

Turns out (I recon) we traced the fuse to a 'regulator rectifier'? which had black gung pouring out of it, so ive orderd a new one of them, hopefully doing this and replacing the wire will get it running again!

Pissed off to the max, went to start my ped, boom. No compression. Feel like killing myself.

Super 8 / Another Example of Kymco Electrical Connection Quality :)
« on: February 08, 2011, 05:21:09 PM »
Pulling up to a round about yesterday evening and my indicators packed in! Pressed the button and I got it to work momenterilly, then packed in again :(

My sidelights were on so I turned them off to see if it was a low battery problem, then all my dash (Fuel Gauge, Clock Lights) stooped working, so did the horn! But the engine was still firing?

Got home and the scooter still idled and revved like it should, turned off the ignition and it was completly dead.

The Positive teriminal on the battery cable had snapped due to erosion, just like I had with the spark plug! All fixed (boshed) now :)

Lucky it was only that and nothing too serious!

Super 8 / GPS Speedometer Readings
« on: January 30, 2011, 01:37:25 PM »
Finally got round to GPSing my scooter to see what its true speed is, and its a weird result

Up to about 10 MPH the GPS and speedo were pretty accurate.

At 39 MPH on the Speedo the GPS said 30.5 MPH?

I was riding along side a mate at 35 MPH on both Speedos and we were going at the exact same speed?

Is my scooter really 10MPH out?

Forgot to add, ther GPS was a Samsung Jet using Route 66 Sat Nav, if that helps :)

Super 8 / Need a new HT Lead
« on: December 25, 2010, 05:18:13 PM »
Was trying to fit this rev counter I got this afternoon when I noticed the HT lead had popped out, not off the spark plug, but out of the plug itself so I was just left with an exposed cable. Had a look at it and it was coverd in copper erosion (greeny blue colour) and rust. Surprised it was actually running at all and it looks as if its been like that for a while! Any ideas where I can get a new Cable.... It did seem to look as if the coil itself was non removeable, hopefully I dont have to buy a new coil aswell :(!

Merry Christmas!!

Super 8 / Fitting a Tachometer to a Super 8 4Stroke
« on: November 29, 2010, 05:37:40 PM »
Seen this done on a video on youtube somewhere, just wondering if anyones done it and knows how to do it.

Im guessing you have to fit some sort of crank shaft sensor?

Super 8 / Oil (again)
« on: November 14, 2010, 06:15:42 PM »
Been rooting through the garage today and I found some 10W40 Semi Synthetic Oil. Would this be okay to put in my scooter?

Ive got no idea what the oil thats in the scooter now is, but in the manual it says it should use 15W40.

Does mixing Semi Synthetic and other types of oil cause any sort of damage or is it perfectly safe just to top my ped up with this 10w40 Semi Synth?

Cheers :)

Super 8 / Checking the Oil Level (4 Stroke)
« on: November 03, 2010, 08:20:49 PM »
Just been looking through the manual and noticed that it says 'When checking the oil, remove the dipsick, clean it and place back into the engine (dont screw it in)'

Dont screw it in? Is this right? So I checked mine as the manual says and the oil doesnt even touch the dipstick?

The oil is still fairly Golden coloured, but if I do screw it all the way in to check the level its almost perfect?

Im confused :(

Super 8 / Major Loss of Power
« on: October 21, 2010, 04:52:42 PM »
Since I put this new air filter in, I noticed a few times when setting off from traffic lights and round abouts I was loosing power. E.G. Instead of setting off full throttle and getting to about 15 mph in seconds its taking ages to get to 10 mph then it starts to pick up properly. It only seems to do this once its warmed up or been on a long flat out drive from cold. So last night I put the original Air Filter back in and I thought it had cured the problem, but just at the last set of traffic lights on my way home it did it again! Any ideas?

Super 8 / Is this right?
« on: October 15, 2010, 07:23:58 PM »
So my scooter at the moment has the Rev Limiter Cut. Ive got a new RamAir Air filter for a quad, (one you cut to size) and ive cut a piece left over to fit into the Airbox on the scooter. Its a 4Stroke by the way. Thing is, im worried about running too lean? Its got the stock exhaust and the Stock Jet.

Could this damage it in anyway at all? Top speed is about 62KMH on the flat downhill or not.

Cheers.

Super 8 / CDI Rev Limiter
« on: October 04, 2010, 06:39:34 PM »
Cut the wire today as I was doing sweet F.A. so I took it out and its normal top speed was about 32MPH 34/5 downhill. Now the top speed is about 39MPH maybe 41 downhill. Thing is, on a straight road flat out it sounds like its struggling badly or is this normal? Theres no serious changes in tone or speed but it sits nicely at 39 but I tend to let off as it sounds pretty unhealthy. Though when I come to a stop it sounds completly normal :)

Super 8 / First Moped!
« on: September 16, 2010, 11:08:54 PM »
Hi, new to this forum :)

Turned 16 a few months back, so as ive now started college I need transport to get there because its quite a treck away, so I got myself a Kymco Super 8 50cc 4 Stroke!

Just a few questions I would like to be answerd please :)

Firstly, the moped is only a 57 plate (so it was made, late 2007) and it only has 3600 miles on it! which brings me to my first question, usually (in the UK) the odometer is in MPH as that is the primary reading on most UK vehicals, but because the moped displays both KMH and MPH I dont no what the odometer is reading, is it 3600 Miles or 3600 Kilometers?

Secondly its not licenced or anything as I got it today (thursday) and I need to take my CBT test yet. I would like to know what speed the moped is capable of, Restricted. Am I right in saying about 30 to 32 MPH or just dead on 30?

Ive had a look round the forum and theres plently to pick up on about de restricing, but I was wondering about this Rev Limiter? Is this there just to limit the speed to 30 or is it purley like a car rev limiter and is there to stop the engine over reving and damaging itself? As I dont want to do this and find out the valves have been smashed to pieces!

Also what else is there that I can remove or change to add performance to the moped?

Cheers, Cardie :D
