Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / Ride to New Harmony
« on: October 02, 2014, 12:32:20 AM »
Took the day off to get in a ride while the weather is till nice. I'm in Southwest Indiana and went to New Harmony, which was settled about 200 years ago on the Wabash River. Two different groups tried to create a Utopian community. That didn't work out but now it's a beautiful little town with much historic interest. Took my time and enjoyed a nice 90 mile ride.

General Discussion / Car 1 - me 0
« on: November 19, 2013, 07:59:33 PM »
Was waiting yesterday morning for some oncoming traffic to clear so I could turn left off the street into work. Heard a screech, followed by a BANG and a THUD and I was flying through the air. I landed on my right side in the street. The driver came out of her car with her phone to see if I was ok. I was still trying to process things and make sure I could move everything. I stood up and seemed to feel ok except for my head was kind of ringing and my right arm & shoulder were hurting. I had on all my gear from my head to my feet, so no scrapes.

Another fellow stopped to check on me. He was driving in the opposite direction and saw the whole thing. He said she just wasn't paying attention. Maybe her phone in her hand had something to do with that. I'm hard to miss with a high-viz jacket and lots of extra lights on my bike, but I guess you have to actually be looking at the road to see me. A couple of guys helped move the scoot into a parking lot and a deputy came to fill out an accident report.

My wife took me to the hospital to be checked out. Several CT scans and x-rays later the doctor said everything looks ok and sent me home. I'm pretty sore today and taking the meds they gave me at the hospital. We called our insurance agent and they've started a claim. I saw one of my doctors this morning who's gonna keep on eye on things with me and made an appointment with my ortho doc so she can check out my shoulder and arm. I'd been given a shot in that shoulder about a month ago to reduce some pain and inflammation.

In thinking what I could have done to avoid this, I guess I should've been checking my mirrors, but I was looking more at the oncoming cars, waiting for them to clear. She wasn't going very fast, as we had just left a stoplight about 200 ft before my turn. If I'd glanced down at my mirror, I might've seen she wasn't slowing down and goosed it to just keep moving down the street.

My wife isn't thrilled. She said this is the 2nd crash I've had. The other was two years ago when I laid it down to avoid hitting a kid on a bicycle. She thinks maybe it's time to hang it up. I have a different opinion, of course. My bike is at the dealer for an estimate. If it gets totaled out, I'm thinking of what I can replace it with.

Everybody be careful out there!

My granddaughter, who'll be 4 in December, loves to sit on my scoot and pretend to ride. I told her the other day I had to go to a nearby town to run some errands. She looked at me and said "Does big scoot know the way?" I said it sure does.

Grandvista 250 / Road Trip
« on: June 19, 2013, 01:09:31 PM »
I'm headed out today on a 440 mile trip with a friend of mine. He rides a Harley Ultra Glide, but I cut him some slack and said he could come along. ;D We're not going to be in a big hurry so may stretch it out to 3 days. We were planning a longer trip but the weather south of us has not been cooperating.

Makes you think about your position when you stop behind other traffic.

Grandvista 250 / Grand Vista luggage

I'm planning a week-long trip in June and looking into extra storage. I have a top case on the back and a duffel bag I can strap on the seat behind me. Has anyone added saddle bags or other extra storage?

General Discussion / Tragedy in bad weather
« on: December 28, 2012, 05:03:32 PM »
Two lives lost in a bad-weather accident. The story isn't real clear about what lanes the two vehicles were in. Some of the comments say the truck was right behind the scooter, some say they were in adjoining lanes. The sad result is two people dead. Be careful out there.

Grandvista 250 / Naked handlebars

I haven't really poked around on my handlebars to see how easy this would be, but has anyone removed the covers to leave the handlebars exposed?

Came across this blog by Gabriel Paez and his scooter adventure. Take a look at http://myfriendpucho.com/ and read about what he created and why he made his ride. He sounds like a very inventive fellow.

Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / Lights mods to my scoot - front end
« on: October 15, 2012, 01:11:08 AM »
Here's the front side of things with extra lights from superbrightleds.com.

The front turn signals on the Grandvista are very low, so I added these marker lights and wired them in as turn signals. They aren't very bright, but show up well at night.

These fog/auxiliary lights are so I can be seen better, but they also light up the area right in front of the bike and also to the sides so I can see that possum before it starts to cross in front of me. If you look closely you'll see s little white led reflection in the front fender. This is a light I stuck under the cowling that shines down on the fender.

And you'll also see a white strip behind the grill. It's just a flexible strip I zip-tied to the wire mesh behind the grill for that sexy look.

And I stuck 2 white strips under the bike to shine on the street.

In the winter I ride home after dark and wanted to maximize my visibility to others. I probably look like a UFO from Close Encounters riding down the road. I didn't put any of these on separate switches, they're wired in so when the scoot is running all the lights except for turn signals and brake lights are on day or night.
The laws in Indiana are specific as to what colors can be used where on the bike. No blue, red only for brakes, amber or white just about anywhere. So if you want to do something similar, check your state's laws.

Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / Lights mods to my scoot - back end
« on: October 15, 2012, 12:05:16 AM »
I think I've maxed out the # of lights I can add to my scoot, so here are some pics. Most of the them came from superbrightleds.com.
My cheap top case had a lens across the back but no lights. I added 3 strips of leds, the center one wired as a running light.

And the top and bottom strips wired to the brake lights.

Then I added two more strips on the top lid wired to the turn signals. You can see the unlit strip in the top pic. They're black and blend into the case well. Being flexible, they wrap around the sides so they're visible from the back or sides.

Never mind the insane speed, it's the unexpected passenger that's the surprise here.

General Discussion / Source for scooter patches?
« on: July 15, 2012, 02:18:50 AM »
I'm wanting to add some patches to my vest & trying to find some sources for cool scooter patches. I'm on a Kymco, not a classic like a Vespa, so a lot of the retro patches don't really apply to me. Anyone found anything online?

Grandvista 250 / Rode in parade today
« on: June 30, 2012, 08:07:30 PM »
I rode my GV in our town's Fourth of July parade today. It was about 95 degrees before the start at 11 am. My scoot handled the heat well, only getting to 3 bars on the temperature gauge at the most. The pace was very slow, so I spent most of the time duck-walking, which got tiresome pretty quick. It did die on me a couple of times after I was able to get a little speed going but then had to stop. It cranked right up, though.

There were a few Harleys with the American Legion group that I didn't envy at all with their heavy, air-cooled bikes.

Happy Fourth to all you U.S. members.
