Changed my oil for the first time, third time for the DT -- Dealer did the first two, but now I have the right set of wrenches and ordered the oil filter on-line. Job could have gone better. Didn’t expect such a strong gout of oil to come out of the first oil plug. Shot past the pan and onto the set of newspapers I hand under it, and onto the pavement on the lane where I was working.

My issues with my shoulder from my crash nearly a year ago (that why I didn’t do the first two jobs) made working the wrenches more complicated and challenging than I expected. Anyway, was able to loosen up the oil plug and the oil filter screen bolts. Replacing the oil filter was easy. Last, changed the dash clock for daylights saving time.

Better late than never.

Wolf, what kind of oil did you use? Manual recommend 5w50. Good luck finding it!!! I used full synthetic 10w40 4 stroke

Pipster,

I must have been lucky. I went to our local NAPA auto supply store and found it on the shelf. The 10w40 was my second choice. I had more problems finding a 24 mm wrench than anything else.

Thanks Wolf, I will check NAPA next time I come across one.  There used to be one around the corner, but closed years ago.I know what you mean about the 24mm wrench! Once you track everything down, ( oil, wrenches, filter ) makes me feel like I actually accomplished something [emoji51][emoji106]

Pipster, so true! Makes you feel more connected to it. Bike felt great riding today -- oil changed, washed, air adjusted -- she ran great!

Karl -- thanks for the tip. I’ll keep that in mind.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the bike. Took mine out for another around town run. These bikes are a joy and finally put in 2 gallons of fuel.

Hi all,

Changed the oil and gear oil in my 2013 Downtown today.  I bought it last August new from Heinen's Motorsports.  I changed the oil and gear oil at 200 miles last year and again today at about 1000 miles.  This time I went full synthetic with Mobil 1 5W-50. I'll change it again at 3000 miles.  One other item in the manual was to clean the crankcase breather.  Where is that?  Anybody ever clean this?  Thanks.

Took "kym" on a 60 mile ride yesterday. I enjoy it more and more every time!! Jimboeau, I've blown out the air filter, a couple of times, but I'll check about the crank case breather. Karl or Dee de, would definitely know about that. Those guys are awesome. If I find anything out, I'll let you know

You are right, Pip!  The only breather I know of is the vent from the rocker box to the air inlet. Other than that we gotta talk to De dee!
