General Discussion / Re: Fun with scooter salesmen...

Nice story. Those metal bodies must have gotten hot!

The new ones are pretty slow for all the hp out of that Subaru motor, but considering the size of the wheels, maybe its for the best. If they had it geared to be freeway capable with slightly larger wheels I think they'd sell a lot better, especially the Eagle II. No amount of nostalgia could make me part with the price they are asking for Ruckus performance. It is interesting in another way, though. Subaru got its start in scooters and now anyone can buy a subaru/cushman.

Didn't the burger replace a forza? Very circular motion....
To me the forza is still to big for around town. I've recently been reminded the joy of small scooters and now 400lbs feels like a ton. the Dowtown sits and will be sold to some lucky sole.

How would you compare the performance of the Cali Classic 200i to the HD200?

K pipe almost fits the bill, just does not have the underbone frame.  If Honda sold the Wave here, I'd have one in my garage. But Honda hasn't sold an underbone in the USA since the early 80's. Maybe now that small displacement bike sells are growing someone will look into it again.

The Symba was just too expensive for what it was. A $1900 Symba might have fared better.

Xciting 400i?

Pretty good article! I don't know how realistic the author is, however. He does not seem to let us know how many of the dealers function or dys-function which effects everything. Cars and pick-ups are for everyone. Airplanes, motorcycles and today's scooters are NOT for everyone! Us older guys recall the splash in Popular Science and similar magazines after WWII the "big deal" about everyone would be wanting to fly (OK, I was a kid but I could read!). Did not happen. Not everyone wanted to leave the ground even if they were excited about the strides made in aviation. Not everyone is excited about the refinements in motorcycles and scooters. Most of "ordinary people" view  anything on two or three wheels as a "death trap" and have no interest. All that is pointing out that two wheels appeals to a very small percentage of the total population in the US. Now, world-wide is a different story and always has been but we are dealing with the US. Back in the 60s when Honda took the country by storm with, "You meet the nicest people on a Honda," there was no real introduction to riding safety. You bought the machine and rolled it out the door, you were on your own. When Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki got going there were some really impressive bikes available with impressive performances and death and injury skyrocketed. Somewhere around 67 Yamaha of soCal put on a riding class in the San Diego stadium parking lot. Thousands of people showed up, rode a 50 or 80 cc bike and we all got t-shirts! Anyone that owned a Yamaha was an automatic "instructor!" It was a good sales gimmick, nothing more and it worked and I would do it again in a flash! They not only produced over one hundred "used" bikes but they sold HUNDREDS more new machines that had not been dumped in the stadium parking lot! It is an old idea that has merit especially today with the advent of good riding gear and MSF available. All it takes is promotion to the dealers by a manufacturer that is really interested in selling their motorcycles and/or scooters. Do it in several major cities across the nation. Make it attractive to riders and dealers alike. Use the innovative thinking of Honda and Yamaha to promote a new generation of riders and customers. Give it a try, Kymco. Whaddya got to lose?

Karl

I like the idea.

I ride to work especially during the summer when I'm not taking the kid to school. I'll go with a helmet and gloves and even a jacket, but beyond that no.

I think the focus of either ATGATT or full blown flip flop squid  kind of helps keep riding on two wheel smostly a hobby in the US. If you look at people going to work on scooters in Taiwan, they're not in full leathers and kevlar jeans.

Agility 125 / Agility 125 bore kit
« on: July 25, 2017, 05:46:14 AM »
Can anyone recommend a bore kit for the 125? It's out of warranty. Time to think about doing stuff to it  ;D
I'm not expecting a demon but there is a two mile stretch of bypass I really would like to access to get across the river and over to some fishing and camping areas I like, rather than going 20 miles around to a two lane bridge. the extra oomph might be enough. and if not, might be fun anyway.

I just haven't noticed a lot of performance stuff for 125's

Kymco News / Re: New Kymco Spade 150fi & Like 150
« on: July 10, 2017, 03:07:11 PM »
The body for the Like obviously looks different but the hp for that motor, wheelbase and everything else is REALLY close to the Kymco Movie. But this will lost about 500 less msrp than the Movie did. That's a really good price for this scooter. Looks-wise it can't compete with the SMax or the PCX150, but price wise, definitely.

If there was a Kymco dealer left in my area that actually had Kymco's on the floor, I'd consider it.

I NEVER saw a scooter ad aimed at anyone other than the 50cc student crowd.

TV'wise I don't see a lot of ads for anything two wheeled. (it may have changed, if I watch the TV anymore for something non-sports, its netflix) But the last scooter commercial I can ever remember was for a Yamaha Riva.  That's going back awhile.

The motorcycle market in USA only knows how to sell superbikes and V-twin cruisers. Nothing wrong with those bikes, but this is a market that is having trouble selling cars to young people. It's about time to come back with the UJM and show people that small displacement bikes and scooters are fun, practical and just about anyone can afford one.

Kymco is off to a good start with Spade and K-pipe, if they'd only fire whoever it is that comes up with names for their products. Seriously, do they have blackmail on the owner? A spade?  Sachs started it all off this time with MadAss but they never had much of a dealer network. Sym is in the same boat with the Wolf (and sadly the now gone Symba). I do see quite a few Groms around here. I'd say lately in good weather I see almost as many groms as cruisers.  Honda's new rebel that came out this summer is a good trend in that direction as well. i think if the market wants to stay alive its going to have to give a closer look at what new riders really want, and find a way to get buts on seats.

Agility 125 / Re: Skidded out
« on: July 06, 2017, 02:00:35 PM »
I have had tire skid on the Agility at an intersection, so you're not alone there. Stock tires. I'd replace them but they're still in good shape at 2000km and I'm pretty sure I'm trading Agility for something bigger next year, otherwise it would be Michelin city grips. I've never been really comfortable with these tires.
