Fuel gauge

So starting today I went out to start the DT up and the fuel gauge was flashing at me. A couple miles down the road it was back to half a tank, where it was last night. This has happened a couple of times today. Any thoughts on what it might be? Faulty fuel sender? Something else?

Here's my guess pug....I've had the same thing happen many times on my Yamaha 1100 and the dealer said the float was just hanging up and once the gasoline splashes around a bit it will shake the float loose. And though it seldom happens it does shake loose on whatever or why ever it is hanging up and returns to normal.
