Octane rating?
« on: April 05, 2013, 11:55:03 PM »
Well I'm finally picking up my new (2012) GTI300 from the dealer tomorrow. I have about a 100 mile ride to get her home. My question is about octane rating. My old (2010) People 150 called for a 91 octane, but ran fine on regular unleaded. What type gas do you other owners use in your GTI300's?

The Owner's Manuals for my former People S200 and People S250, stated 91 Octane, the same as my GTi300.  However, this is NOT for US Octane, this is for Overseas Fuel.  For the US, our 87 Octane, is their 91 Octane.  Just use Regular 87 Octane Gas, and it'll be fine.

May want to consider adding Sta-Bil or Star Tron to your Fuel, in case you get Fuel that contains Ethanol.  That stuff can gum up pretty quick!  I use both Brands.  Doesn't take much at all.  I do it every Fill-Up.

Best of Luck & CONGRATS on getting it tomorrow!

Cheers!

Right you are BB! ;)  Just remember, the higher the octane you buy.......  the richer the oil company executives get.... Lol!

I put 93 Octane in here in RI,..It only costs me about $6 to fill, so I doubt the oil companies will get rich off of me. We have corn/gas and I use a fuel additive to stave off bacterial growth in the gas tank. The local motorcycle dealer said they began having problems once they switched the gas to to a gas/EtOH mix with bacterial growth in the gas tanks.

I use 93 octane up here in Mass. as well. I add Startron ethanol fuel treatment every fill up. Then, I use Seafoam every other tank. Works like a charm!

If you use StarTron, I would think that you would not need SeaFoam.  Don't they do the same functions ?

Mary K: No. They are different. Startron is really a dedicated "ethanol" fuel treatment. Seafoam acts as a fuel stabilizer & has other fuel/carb/FI cleaners properties. Trust me....I've been using them both for 8+ years now (Mass. has been an ethanol based fuel for a long time now)  Both works like a charm!

Here is a link for what Seafoam does:

I wanted to get an answer from Kymco on the octane issue so I asked Kymco the following question on their customer website:

"Is the suggested gasoline octane rating stated in the Owners Manual for scooters sold in the U.S. measured by the European/Asian standards or by United States standards?"

Kymco replied:

"The Octane listings in the owners manuals are probably Asian standards. Regular gas is fine for KYMCOs."

Kudos to all who new that already.

I posted my same post on the 500 forum and got some instructive feedback - worth looking at.

FYI  I'm the one that started this post. I've got about 400 miles on my scoot and have been using Regular (87 octane) with no problems. Running great, but will upgrade with Dr pulley 14g sliders in another few hundred miles.
