You dont want to give alcohol to a Scotsman, if you so treat him like a firework, light fuse and stand well back to watch the explosion  ;D

Yeah, we like to drink, and then drink more, but surprisingly enough i actually rarely drink myself  anymore :-\ At most i would say i go get drunk maybe 3-4 times a year these days, i just cant sit there getting plastered when i have other things to do, and besides we cant drive kr ride under the influence, you just fall asleep or get in a fight. Not for me, im too old now, been there, done that, got the medal for it and moved on.

The misery Scot thing is a complete myth, prob dreamed up by some Englishman no doubt to try keep us down and dampen out Celtic spirit. It didnt work. If anything Scots are among the most generous and open people you will meet, even when drunk. We will stop and help anyone we see in trouble, are always open to new cultures and foreign immigrants, and would share out last can of beer with the guy next to us who has none  :D

A little tip, NEVER call anyone from the Irish Republic British  :o Thats actually as bad as saying Scotland is in England, in fact its probably worse given all the troubles over there in the past with the IRA etc fighting to get the Brits out, which they did  :) It is confusing for foreigners but anyone who moves here or Ireland would soon realise we ARE seperate nations with many many differences in our priorities,  our wants and our needs. This is why we would be far better to split the Union, divorce our countries in a pleasant way and move on with our lives seperately, we dont get on much now, we have different ideals as nations.

Btw, did you know if Scotland were to gain independence we would become the 7th wealthiest nation on earth?

I wouldnt use the world Slav either, in my mind thats certain areas of Russian? Probably wrong? Croats, or Serbs is what i would use, i still remember Yugoslavia tho, my mate even had one of those tiny Yugo cars in the early 90's  :D

A coworker of mine from Scotland and I were in 2005 for five weeks in the same hotel in the third country. My routine was to get the work done and go back to the room. His was to spend the evening around hotel bar. Sometimes if I would meet him it would take an hour to walk from hotel bar to our rooms because he was talking, and talking and talking, and talking some more, and I could barely understand 15 % of what he was saying. I am used to listening to various accents, from American, Australian to African and Indian because I work with 120 nationalities and we use English as official language, but this particular accent was very difficult to comprehend. I think he was from Glasgow.

Miser stuff - just wanted to share with you that God knows when this idiom "cheap as a Scotsman" (rough translation) has entered our language. This is strange because we as a nation have no historical ties to UK.

Ireland - I am quite well educated/informed about the world in general and especially about Europe, your internal country's organization is familiar to me and I understand the situation in Northern Ireland. I have been following it since I was a child (I was always interested in strange things).

Slavs - Well, what do you think where does "Yugoslavia" come from? :) "Yugo" means "south" in our languages. We are south Slavs and there are many other, Russians/Belarusians/Ukranian are eastern Slavs. It is a very long story but I am not sure that dividing any country will bring prosperity. Yugoslavia fell apart 20 years ago and we STILL DID NOT reach the level of industrial output from 1990. Two lost decades. Economy of volume is a great thing, I am against you falling apart because I saw first hand what happens when one big country falls apart to 6-7...  >:(

Yugo car - think of it as a local version of Reliant Robin or Morris Marina.  ;D

p.s. My company has an office in Aberdeen.

I'll let the links speak for me.

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/jamesdelingpole/100017393/climategate-the-final-nail-in-the-coffin-of-anthropogenic-global-warming/

Global warming, just another way of putting space between you and you money.

Thats the problem 08', i could easily post up just as many links as i wanted too that would disagree with those against climate change and prove its real. I've been pretty much into this kinda thing for a while now, looking into renewables and low energy use electrics etc ( Im an electrical engineer by trade) so i have read to up on it. I actually just applied for a new job last week in an energy management role to work with our company in reducing our carbon footprint to comply with new carbon emmissions accreditation. We need to reduce our carbon emmisions by 2% per year and i need to work out how to do this, if i get the job that is  :)

Its actually a little bit of a myth that it cost you money to reduce your carbon output, in fact it can save you money in most cases. We spend £4,000,000/yr at our yard on just power and water, £4,000,000 every year  :o  If we reduce our carbon utput we also reduce the cost of paying for so much power and water , o it actually saves us money i the longrun as well as reducing our carbon footprint and emmissions,we dont lose, we gain , and so does the planet  :)

Its like the 60's all over again with the smoking/tobacco debate, big business who have interests in ignoring the dangers of climate change will and do support and fund all sorts of reports/papers/"scientists" to put out their arguement and deny the danger, all to cause confusion, delay change and keep the money rolling in. I have NO doubt climate change is real, its happening nowand we need to try at least to do something about it. I will accept that science cannot 100%say it is man-made but whether it is or not doesnt matter to me, its stiil happening and we still need to do what we can to deal with it before its too late,if its not too late already :-\

Scotland aims to run of 100% renewable energy by 2020-2025, hopefully we'll make it. How excellent is that? All power created for free after the infrastructure and devices are in place. No nuclear, no dirtycoal or oil,and no need to import from dodgy countries with questionable leaderships? Works for me.  :)

Sounds about right  :D Thats where i live, Glasgow, i love it. No one understands us, even some other Scotsmen from other areas dont know what were saying half the time, and the drunker we get the faster we talk  :D .

We were voted the worlds knife-crime capital of the world a few years ago and then topped it by getting the murder capital of Europe later   :D Next year we're going for Murder capital of the world ::)

Its actually fine tho, when you live here you know where to go and where to avoid, who you can trust and who is out to make bother. We have an inbuild instinct to sniff out when a fight is about to break out and can get the hell out the way  :D Its mostly scheme related violence, street gans etc in poor areas, every city has the same bother but like you say,we like our alcohol (& drugs) so add that and it ends in chaos and mayhem.

Stilli love my city and my country, keeps you on your toes. Guess its like NY only more aggressive  :D
Chaos is my co-pilot.

I only have one question for you then, why did they have to lie on their reports to back up claims of temp. increases?

Personally I don't know how anyone can say going green or solar, wind etc is a bad thing, taking polutants out of the air by not putting them there in the first place is good for everyone. I still disagree that there is any warming that needs to be addressed, and I respect you for your opinion.

That was f@@ked up,shouldnt have happened,it was stupid and wrong and did serious damage to that reports credibility. The folk responsible admit they felt frustrated that all the data and reports before had gone unheaded and ignored for so long and the debate was just rumbling on getting nowhere, like i pointed out big oil and gas corps dont want to lose their cash cow so hire people to debunK  and put out dis-information to confuse and distract so they can keep the dollars rolling in. The exact same tactics used by the big tobacco companies, "smoking does'nt cause cancer, thats ridiculous, prove it", then when doctors proved it the companies tried and succeeded for decades to delay change by debunking and spreding dis-information. The scientists tried to make it so the politicians etc would listen so they "sexed it up a bit" to try get fol to start doing something and stop messing about.

If you look at the whole overall picture you can see that something is definately happening in our climate, its changing for sure. Man-made or not its changing. Even if your of the opinion its not, surely its better if we can still function more or less as we do now without producing so much carbon, or burning so much oil and gas and creating so much pollution, to do so. If nothing else each country would have in-house generated power, no more oil and gas imports from outside,we would all be self-sufficient. No more wars over oil. No more reliance on foreign tin-pot regimes. And as a bonus, if climate change is real then it helps that too.  :)

A little trivia for you Axy  :)

1.     Overall Wealth: An independent Scotland would be ranked 6th in the OECD in terms of GDP per head, compared to the UK's sixteenth place (in 2010).

2.      Oil: There is up to 24 billion barrels remaining in the North Sea. Such a figure equates to a wholesale value of some £1.5 trillion in today's prices.

3.      Renewables: Scotland has around 25 percent of Europe’s potential offshore wind and tidal energy, and a tenth of Europe’s wave power potential.

4.      Food & Drink:  The latest food and drink export figures show exports are at an all time high of £5.4 billion, and growing.

5.      Public Finances: In terms of our public finances, Scotland is better off than the UK as a whole to the tune of £510 for every man, women and child in Scotland in the most recent year (2010/11).

6.      Education: Scotland has five of the top 200 universities in the world.

7.      90% of the UK's natural resources are in Scottish waters and on Scottish land. Wonder why they dont want to lose us yet?

I couldn't survive another Eth. battle so I will just drib, and drab.
Just my gut/heart tells me that England is the only country that would suffer in a break up of "THEIR" empire. The rest of the countries they attempted to rule would prosper due to a release of burden to England. None of these countries ever benefited from England's presence anyway. I understand the Slavic countries misfortune on separation because they were all dependent on each other, where England was the only beneficiary in it's gambit. I personally see separation as a great step forward into a new era in world civilization. It would release so much old animosity, and ill will that a new begining can develop vs stagnation, and continued resentment. IF England collapses into a lessor nation I say KARMA! Truthfully , and with NO disrespect to anyone England has a lot of repaying to do before they can restructure, and take part in the world as it should be. They have never been anything as a role model or world power or anything substantial in the post WWI era anyway. Too much Hooidie Tooidie pompas old school retention, and not enough forward momentum in MY opinion. Bullies Always grow old, and die. That's just the way it is.
Besides the US will starve its social security program to help poor England recover. And you ALL know England will ask.
I'm not saying this with malice of heart, I'm just cutting to what I see as the core of the problem. Karma!

This is very interesting, especially the part about BDP per capita. I can tell you that Scotland is not adequately branded outside of UK. For example, many people in USA are proud of their "stubborn Irish heritage", but you can rarely hear about their "Scottish heritage". Also, Scotland is known for its Scotch whiskey and William Wallace :), kilts and bagpipes. It should be more "advertised".

Separatism is all over Europe. Just remember Spanish people and Basque people, separatism in the North of Italy or recent attempts to divide Belgium into Flemish and Valoon countries.

Actually you would be surprised how many Americans DO know of their Scottish History and DO celebrate it. There is even Scottish events in the US too, im sure there was a huge parade thing in NY a couple of years ago to promote Scotland. Every year we get masses of American tourists to the Scottish Highlands and also Stirling is popular (thanks to William Wallace and the Braveheart movie) Edinburgh is popular too.

I dony know how many Americans i met on f.b in the past who had Scots or Irish ancestry, but it was a lot  :)

I think we do ok, but as an independent nation we would do a lot better, im sure of it.

Well, Irish people sold their story just nicely. Even here, St. Patrick's day became sort of an unofficial holiday. (!) Of course it has a lot to do with alcohol and selling stuff and little with true heritage celebration...

Yeah the Irish got it nailed. I love the Irish too. We have lots of Irish blood where i live too, the area i grew up in was known as "Little Ireland"  :D

Glasgow, in fact the whole of the West coast of central Scotland has a large Irish immigrant community, they came across looking for work and a better life for the last few centuries. We have always been close that way, even had Irish clans fighting with Scottish clans against the English a loooooong time ago, thats why Scots and Irish get along so well, the French too, they gave our Bonnie Price Charlie  somewhere to live when he was exiled from Scotland, we dont forget our friends  :)

I still remember folk with collection tins going round here collecting for the Irish Republicans when i was a kid, it was just normal to us. And then of course we have the Glasgow Celtic vs Glasgow Rangers football rivalry which is a legacy from that Catholic/Republican vs Protestant/Unionist thing in Ireland. Like you i was interested in the whole issue and studied it in some detail, only i saw most of it 1st hand growning up.

St paddys day is more about selling Guinness these days than anything else tho, maybe us Scots should build up St Andrews day to sell more of our whiskey  :)

I did not know you were getting along well with the Irish. The main reason for my thinking is the fact that Scotland is predominantly protestant and Irish are Catholic. I thought that differences are irreconcilable, especially considering the situation between the Nationalists and Unionists in the Northern Ireland. I understand that there is even a Scottish minority called Ulster Scots in Northern Ireland.

Do you speak any Gaelic? I know that less than 1% of Scottish people do. Also I wonder if people from Ireland can understand Gaelic people from Scotland considering that both languages have their roots in the medieval Middle Irish. We have a similar situation where almost all Slavs can understand each other to a degree, ranging from some understanding (comparable to you Brits :), sorry :), Scotsmen, listening to pidgin English speaker from Papua, for example), to almost completely similar languages (Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian).
