Aluminum Chips
« on: March 18, 2012, 01:21:16 AM »
Hi....Not new to scooters, but new to this forum and Kymcos.

I just scored a 2010 Super 8 150cc...still under warranty.

It has 1820 miles , so I changed the oil.....and found this.
Is it normal?
It is all aluminum and no steel.

That is NOT normal. It could be cases or piston or cylinder head. You would have to completely disassemble the engine to be sure. It MAY be shear off from machining because it all looks "cut" and sharp

Hey, sorry, but just for fun. . . I got steel chips like that out of a used Ford truck with 302 V8 I once bought.  I crossed my fingers and drove it another 100 thousand miles.  ;)  I doubt you could be so lucky with a small scooter engine though.   :(

One piston out of eight doesn't hurt as much.

They all look uniform and not like broken chunks.

There was one spiral piece in the oil.

I saved the bits and pieces and will notify the dealer on Monday.

At the very least I would insist they do a compression check.  Does the Super 8 have an oil pump? Oil filter?  If so it wouldn't hurt to get to have a look in both places.

The oil pump is aluminum, and can be damaged if those chips run thru it. The spiral piece shows actual "cutting" or milling of running parts. It could even be the oil pump. Have you pulled out the oil screen?

This cap is where the oil screen is.

Lucky for me the screen exists. I have heard of some brands of GY6 engine not having it.

The dealer is handling the warranty transfer for me. They are also checking to see if some charging system recall was performed.
I bet it was wasn't done. When I take the scooter in, I will give them some work. 1. the chips 2. the scooter feels like the belt slips at take off.....that's another subject, but its bugging me.

Since we are waiting..

anyone ever have slippage at take off?

When I first tried the scooter, it started to rev and move a bit, then feel like there was no traction in the belt and blammo! something catches and snaps my neck and takes off.

At first I thought it was a dirty carb and it went away after I rode it abit. Well the problem came back when I put the GF on the back seat. It still happens a little with my 230lb ass on it.

Clutch? Belt?

I would have the dam thing dismantled if this was a cheapo with no warranty, but since it has a warranty........I am leaving it alone for now.

It may be the clutch slipping. They get glazed pretty easily if they are really babied. You can have them clean, and de glaze the clutch bell. It would help to open the cvt to see whats what anyway.
