Starter runs on even with key off, switch off etc.
« on: April 29, 2011, 09:49:32 PM »
Battery was low, thought it might start.  Instead the starter just kept running on.  Switched the switch off, key off and out and kick stand down - starter still running.

Disconnected battery - starter off.  Charging battery now - any ideas?

Yes. There are two wires connecting (or a bare bit of wire and the frame) where they should not be.

Similar problem here:
http://www.kymcoforum.com/index.php?topic=2485.0

May be your starter relay is stuck, but I'm betting the start switch (on the handlebar) contacts are sticking. Try getting a new starter switch, and replacing the starter relay.

Next time it happens, try flicking the starter switch a few times, see if that knocks the contacts apart. If so, you've found your problem.

And please do the KymcoForum.com community a favor and get the part numbers for the starter switch and the starter relay from your dealer, and post them here, so those of us who do our own repairs know what parts to look for when this problem comes up.

Thanks.

I am going to take it down to Capparal tomorrow.  I think it is the starter solenoid but we shall see.
I wii post what it was and what parts.

Kymco seems to have notoriously weak starter switches, as others are having problems with them, as well. In some cases, the starter switches fail open, so they can't use the starter at all, in other cases, they fail closed, or intermittent closed.

That's why I chose the starter switch as the place to start looking, there seems to be a theme of failure there.

Wouldn't the key or kickstand shut the starter down then?

I am going to rent a trailer and hail it down the mountain to Chapparal Motorsports in San Bernardino in the morning.  They are a huge multi brand dealer and should be able to diagnose and repair it if anyone can.  The battery is showing a full charge.  I have read the other thread and will inform them others have experienced similar problems with other Kymco models.

I would think it would not be that difficult to trace where the power is coming from starting at the solenoid and working backwards.

Problem is the starter relay.  Chaparral is contacting Kymco for warranty info and will fix it.
