One possibility would be to change to LiFePo4  batteries. I did and do change all scoots and motorcycles to this source of energy, best experience since four years already.

Ruffus, any challenges using this type of battery in older bikes? I assume you'd need a battery tender / charger that can charge Lithium batteries?

edit - I had to look up what a LIFePo4 battery was...from Wikipedia

"The lithium iron phosphate battery (LiFePO
4 battery) or LFP battery (lithium ferrophosphate) is a type of lithium-ion battery using lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO
4) as the cathode material, and a graphitic carbon electrode with a metallic backing as the anode. Because of their low cost, high safety, low toxicity, long cycle life and other factors, LFP batteries are finding a number of roles in vehicle use, utility-scale stationary applications, and backup power.[8] As of September 2022, LFP type battery market share for EVs reached 31%, and of that, 68% were from EV makers Tesla and BYD alone.[9]"

..hawk, concerning this batteries:
-changed to this type, scooters (KYMCO LIKE 200i, XC 500i, XC 300iR, YAGER 150,....) assuming their modern regulators would (in association with batteries internal BMS [battery management system] to keep them charged, and it was like that. Especially the bigger i-models are picky about start-voltage.

-changed on a YAMAHA 650, MOTO GUZZI V35, MOTO GUZZI Nevada 750, MOTO GUZZI V65 to this type AND even the "old" regulators (see pics) handled and are handling charging pretty well. We are NOT having low freezing temperatures here, not below minus 2°C.

All cycles start in this temps, if you use the "twenty second battery warmup trick", ignition on, headlight on, 20', light off, start.

Initial reason for that WAS the XC 500s pecularities for starting voltage. On the others just because people (me included) don't want to think about battery care anymore.
Take the biggest mountable possible in all vessels.

I've toasted 3 of my Ryobi lithium batteries by leaving them in cold, in my cold weather region, I'm not sold

problem is parasitic drain,  Battery in my UXV450i is going on 11 years old, never been connected to a battery charger of any kind, still starts right up in zero°f weather after sitting a couple months, my AK550 can go 3 days, but not 4 before the battery has discharged enough that it cannot start the bike
What, a lithium battery would extend that to six days ? it wouldn't solve the problem of the drain

100% with you on this "uncontrolled drain matter".

AFAIK there was an software update for AK 550, dealership was supposed to do, which erradicated a high percentage of this issue.

BUT, it could not be solved completely, so a pigtail was recommended.

A halfbaken solution, which several "modern" motormanagements share, and technically not satisfying.
