8 year review of my time with the Piaggio Liberty 150i ABS
« on: December 29, 2025, 05:45:15 PM »
I never asked much in the way of WOT speeds from any of the 4 scooters I've owned over the years (Burgman 400, Honda Forza 300, Kymco LIKE200i or the Liberty)

So, if you need to cruise at more than 55>61 MPH, indicated, you'll need a different scooter than the Liberty and its air-cooled 155cc motor.

I love the motorcycle like tracking of these big wheels when going down the road! Getting comfortable - I always find myself going a few MPH over what my speed would be on the scooter I alternate riding - my LIKE200i.

Though I haven't, yet, been shot at on it - this being Ohio, I've found it to be otherwise 'bullet-proof'.
It just goes, starts and stops when I want it to in all kinds of weather. I'm a big fan of EFI scoots!!
I purchased it new, the summer of 2017, and it has never been back to the shop for the supposedly necessary periodic 'scans' at the Vespa dealer. (tornado blew my Vespa dealer away as I was purchasing the Liberty!) I did go to a Honda dealer for tire replacements on wheels I handed them.

It has not been neglected - for I give it regular oil (s) and filter changes. And while the valve checks are not as easy as on my LIKE200i - they are not difficult (I purchased the Piaggio down-load serv manual before purchasing the scooter - to look at all the servicing methods. It looked good.)

Parts are not expensive and are readily available from AF1-Racing in TX by mail-order, or Scooterwest in CA.
I've needed tires after 10K miles, and, whether it was needed or not > two valve checks, one NGK spark plug, oil changes, oil and air filter change and a belt and rollers at 6K miles. I use only Piaggio parts - they're not expensive. One complaint about servicing: so many of the torx fasteners are bloody tight!! the first time through.

Having been through much of the scooter while servicing it - I've been impressed with the build quality, panel fitment, paint quality, mechanicals, etc.

I was frankly skeptical of the rear mono-shock. But it rides at least as well at the two on my Kymco. It has a remarkable listed load capacity.
I wish it had a rear disc brake, rather than the drum brake - but I get that, along with the front ABS, will help to keep me out of trouble some day. Tough to lock the rear - at least I've never done it. Then again - at my normal cruise of 38mph, or less, I could probably just drag my feet to stop :)

I love the bright, useful halogen 55/60W headlight (my every ride starts in the dark!) and the broad brake lights.
I like the bench seat - not being forced to sit close to the grips. My 14Wide feet fit the floor.

Get the dealer to throw on the side stand to make his sale. Do NOT buy the Piaggio fly-screen unless you plan never to ride at night!
From Scooterwest, my, apparently one-off, perfectly color-matched red Piaggio/Liberty top case fits my needs, if not my XXXX modular full-face helmet!

The scooter is easy to keep clean - my 8 yr old could pass as a 6 month old.
Dash is classy, simple and easy to read. ABS and low fuel warning lights. Electric seat release with hidden back-up key release.
I read in 2017, that Piaggio had cranked out over 900,000 of these big-wheel step-throughs - so, they've gotten them pretty close to right .

I wanted a big-wheel, step-through scooter from Honda - but they stopped selling them here. And actually - I like the appearance of the Liberty better than the Hondas or Kymcos.

Buy remorse?
Nope - but I would like a white one, too!

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

If ever I'm in the market for a big wheel step through I'd buy one.  Nice looking machine.

That was a great review! I am currently looking. I also like the step through design. It will go along with my Honda ADV160, which, so far, has been great. Had the like200i but we really don't have a Kymco dealer now. they have a large wheel, step through scooter also and I had good luck with the Kymco. Thanks again
