Kymco Like 150i starter won't turn off
« on: December 17, 2025, 01:36:48 PM »
Hi all! This isn't constant, but a couple times after driving, when I try to turn off the scooter, the engines turns off, but the starter keeps going, as if I'm pushing the starter button. When I turn the key back to on, it just starts automatically. The kill switch does the same thing. This has happened a couple of times and once it resolved on its own, and the second time I drove it straight to a mechanic. The mechanic said it was due to corrosion on the battery connections (I live next to the ocean). He said he cleaned them and it was good to go. He said something about that triggered the starter. That sounded weird to me, but it was a Kymco place, so I thought I would just see if that fixed the problem. It did for a few months, but then I needed a new battery. So I replaced it, and the same thing just happened again. This time it resolved on its own. I checked the battery and there is no corrosion; everything looks fine.

Anyone else have this issue and get it resolved? Or have ideas? Or can point me to where the starter relay is? I haven't found any good videos online for this model in a quick search.  Thanks!

yes, this is something you definitely need to sort out. To find your starter relay you will need to follow the positive cable from your battery, it should go directly to your starter relay. You may need to pull some body plastics off. Have you inspected your starter button for any corrosion or anything making it activate without help from you?

Our resident expert at diagnostics, Ruffus, will hopefully be along soon with suggestions.

Welcome here in this hive!
Does not seem to me an BATTERY ONLY issue, its somehow related for sure, but not the main thing.

As hawk writes, its really smtg which has to be sorted out, coz might destroy your starter motor, AND more expensive, your freewheel assy within the engine.

Maybe you start in a different order as I described,
startswitch frist and then all other

-METIN box and fueltank cover out
-on scoots RH sides upper frame you see an device with a RED/Green or BLACK/Gray plastic caps on it and thick cables, this is your start magneto, which might be faulty by corrosion and sticks sometimes

-take it out, benchtest (YT video) clean or renew
(aftermarket pieces do as well)
-NO cure?

-RH side handlebar switch off (very tender)
(green plaque in it ?) clean contact pins, dielectric grease or coppergrease
-dismantle LH switch assy, there is sometimes a groundfailure to find too
-NOT a remedy?

-MULTIMETER at hand or somebody who knows how to use it
-front plastic "TIE" off from scooter
-under your front there are several relays, one of them is your starter relay
-good battery and try to change relays with each other
-measure voltage during starting process...
Pls come back for Qs. or feedback
