As a 68 Beetle was my first car (bought w 80k miles for $800), I really enjoyed this.

Maybe that one would have gotten 400k miles, but a mechanic set the points too tight and the engine blew on a road trip.  Such a shame, as I’d customized it w a crinkly, crumpled roof by flipping it on a patch of black ice going 65mph on an interstate.

my first car was a '68 Beetle, about 45k miles paid $750. Mine was kinda wheezy, needed a valve job, I pulled the motor myself, sent the heads out for machining, ran great but didn't get the proper end play, started destroying rear main seals, yep, I've changed one in a snowbank on the  roadside with a flashlight

Our first VW - white roof over red. Used '69, I think. Our first set of 4 wheels after my return from Vietnam - and discharge from my 2 yr obligation. As you can see here - they don't need an engine.


Next auto - a new '71 Beetle. Lovely car! My all-time favorite.


Final VW - in 1991 bought a new Vanagon GL - seen here getting prepped for sale 20 yrs on.


Where kid #6 was conceived~! (vacation along Mass. shoreline - romantic lighting from a nearby Dunkin Donuts!)
Said #6, my daughter - hopes I'm joking!
Me? The Sgt Major and I love it!
Photo here is of the 2-seat rear seats folded in a 'Camper' - ours had the full width, 3-seat arrangement.
The rear seat slides forward and then down - abutted to the thick mattress over the engine cover - makes a comfy bed!

bringing back memories of my older brother Tom,  R.I.P. used to run a foreign car mechanic shop, specalizing in VW.
He had a 57 Transporter, he bought from local PD, cost was fine, towing & storage, less than $50, had a toasted motor. He was also into NASCAR mini-stock, as a car & engine builder,

In the 70's VW named many of their models after prominent winds and ocean currents.
Passat, Jetta, Golf, Polo, Vento and the fairly well-known wind: Scirocco - a powerful hot wind originating in the Sahara.

My Navajo friend, Two Socks Standing in River, was once married to a little gal named Winds in Her Pants. Sometimes a name can tell you a lot about things.
