A crowd containing the regular ne'er do wells, two FNG's (tourists from the hotel), a skate/boarder?, and a very respectful looking young Nurse gathered on the sidewalk in front of Dino's at 6:45AM yesterday.
The shop was dark -
the door was locked!. (sometimes he's in there, door unlocked, but keeps it dark because he can't stand the looks of one or more of us ancient mariners)
Speculation flowed.....
"He's run off with one of his hired help?"
"No, I've met his wife - she'd hunt him down and kill him!" (
"goodness!" , from the Nurse)
"Maybe he's had the Big One and is lying in there on the floor?"
"Well, hope he got the coffee made.....!"
"Maybe he changed the hours?"
"He wouldn't dare!"
"Try calling the shop's phone."
"He hasn't answered that phone since 1997."
We discussed going around back to have a look. But that involved a walk of a few hundred yards. Better, to stand and fuss.
Then, bingo! 07:10AM - The lights came on, the door opened and a very flustered young barista stepped out to offer her apologies.
All was forgiven.....the coffee was ready!
To understand our consternation: Dino celebrated his 25 th year in Yellow Springs a few years ago.
Ed was first in the door that opening day and had not missed a day since then! (he was featured in a newspaper story!)
Ed, just chuckled, "well, there's a first for everything!"
Picked up my Guatemalan and headed down to the Group W!
Too long ! It had been a month!
