Weekend ride report on my AK550
« on: September 01, 2025, 03:30:08 AM »
every Labor Day weekend, my brother has a big bash, used to be a camp, but now his primary residence. Usually I trailer my UXV450i, and a couple times I brought my K-Pipe along too.. He has as many as 200 people showing up, all ages from infants to great-great grandfathers/mothers. This year was simple, just burgers, dogs and pot-luck, the fireworks in the evening, He hires a pro fireworks guy, no more lighting with torch, everything is  computer controlled, constant fireworks for $5k worth of pyrotechnics

The ride up mostly consisted of 80mph cruising on I-93, surprisingly little traffic, was moving 60+ thru Franconia Parkway section

No sooner did I cross the river into Vermont, started sprinkling and light rain on and off, had to stop for gas sooner than expected. Normally I get 225 miles to my flashing light, at the speeds I was going, only 125 miles (I have a GIVI tall shield mounted in the low position, top of my head sticks up about 2" above the screen.)

By the time I was off I-91, State Route 58 was wet and it was raining steady. Then turning off 58, a secondary state highway on to the town road he lives on. Wet slick gravel, T hit the rain mode button 25mph for the last 3 miles. 47 mpg on the way up

This year due to the rain I suppose, less than a hundred attendees, and more people showed up in their pickup truck/suv instead of a Side by Side

The way back today, dry, a little warmer, and I held back on the speed, keeping it closer to 75 than 80, 58mpg

nice long ride! Your total ride probably about equals my entire summer riding mileage so far! Bet it was a beautiful, scenic ride

scenic ride, I suppose, it's the scenery I grew up with and seen all my life, so nothing special

the AK has good weather protection, outside of my legs below my knees is all that got damp. not even soaked, and some raindrops dribbling down from the top of my helmet, I did turn my grips on low

one thing I did notice, the AK has the exhaust note of an outboard motorboat

Its interesting to see the new 2025 Kymco AK550 Premium here, but it seems that they detuned the engine a little bit

My 2022 AK550 has 53 HP and 40,6 ft lbs of torque
The 2025 Premium has 50.9 HP and 38.4 ft lbs of torque

I know it seems like a small change, but I wonder if these figures are better for engine performance

50hp is plenty for off highway,  when the flow of traffic is 80mph. a few more is safer, I'd like to see that hp number closer to 75
