New Village Landmark

Rode out to a neighbouring village yesterday to take a few pictures following a sad event last Autumn when an early storm took down a tree which had stood there for hundreds of years.  This old Horse Chestnut (Conker) tree had stood majestic as long as I could remember and that was probably only 20% of its life!  Locals very quickly decided they couldn't just cut it up and cart it away so they employed a local chain saw artist to give them something to mark its passing.

 

I think you'll agree that he has done them proud!

 

Just note the drainage incorporated into the seat.

 



Nice to see such artistic talent is still around out there.  (BTW  The fish & Swan themes are to reflect the nature of the pond, just out of shot, for which the village is famous.)

We have a local who lives out in the middle of nowhere (and in NoWhere Ohio - that's like on another planet!) and made human figures w/ his chainsaw out of the stumps of 3 hardwood trees in his front yard. Painted them. Gets a lot of honks on the slow speed hairpin road he lives on.
35 yrs ago I supervised a crew of 35 - 45 clients earning their food-stamps by working hours for the county. (their check divided by min. wage = hours to work ea. month)
One summer we went to the Children's Home (64 acre orphanage) to cut down 22 old growth hardwood trees which an arborist marked and deemed as dangerous. Bigdam trees! We turned those trees into 87 chords of firewood, auctioned by the county.,
Had to buy a new Stihl saw with 36" bar. Dealer made me take a safety class and sign papers!

I admire his clean cut of your tree!
