So I had not ridden it in 9 months. It has a new air filter which looked fine. How do I check the carburetor and what do I check for  ?     Thanks.

7 months too late with this answer....but the answer is to clean your carb and specifically your pilot jet. It has an opening about 1/3 of a mm and it clogs very, very easily.

remove the bowl on your carb, unscrew (remove) your pilot jet and soak it and spray it with carb cleaner then blow with compressed air if you have it. Be careful putting anything through it as you don't want to enlarge the ~ .35mm hole in it.
