What oil, how often, which scooter?
« on: April 26, 2020, 02:53:15 PM »
Remember lads - no name calling😊
We can agree to disagree.

SHELL Rotella T-6 5/40, every 600-800 miles on my 8yr old, filterless, aircooled, LIKE200iLX.

Gear oil once a year, Honda Pro 80/90.

I'll play...from most recent oil change back over 5 years...Pennzoil 10W-40, Rotella T5 15W-40, and before that 4 changes with rotella T6 5W-40...

annual oil changes as mileage averages ~200...

Royal Purple 75W-90 gear oil changes...did it the first 3 years along with end of season oil change but haven't changed it since Fall on '17 as I've only put  around 300 miles on scoot since then.

Was watching a Rolling Wench youtube vid and he was changing the gear oil on a Honda Metropolitan and mentioned the 12,000 mile recommended change interval..got me thinking that mine could probably go a few more miles between changes.

Downtown 300i/UXV500i was Mobil 1 0w40 until they outpriced everyone at Walmart so now Quaker State 10w30 "full synthetic" until they get greedy. Change intervals are reasonably close to recommended.

My oil philosophy is ANY OIL IS BETTER THAN NO OIL!

- All bikes are liquid cooled.

Rotella 5w40 "Synthetic" every 3-5k in the burgman depending on usage.
Every 1-2 k in one HD200.  Once or twice a year in the one ridden less .
Gear oil is normally done at the same time.
The transmission/clutch oil is done during the oil change on the burgman.

I sometimes use a decent brand of motorcycle oil vs. Rotella.
I generally use Lucas or Mobile One synthetic for gear oil.

I have used about every kind of oil out there that's appropriate for the vehicle.  I have not found a lot of difference between 'em.

If it's got a clutch, Castrol 10-40W semi synth

If it's a CVT, Shell 10-40W fully synth :)

In particular, the Shell fully synth was gorgeous in my scoot when I was couriering for a living and doing about 1000 miles a week. I don't miss that aspect of it...
Rides;

Suzuki GW250 Inazuma (2016)
Honda C70C (red, 1983)

My scooter, 2019 XTown 300i has dry clutch, but no oil filter other than screen----WalMart house brand 10-40 works just fine....and has worked for me for the last 500,000 2 wheel miles.  Because of lack of filter, I try to change every 1000 miles or so.

Rear End---whatever gear oil I have on hand....maybe once a year.

Most of these scooters are not ridden high miles----most damage comes from sitting/short runs.

I ride a lot of 8900 rpm highway miles at 90-95 degrees. Should I consider a 10W-40 over my current 10W-30? Seems like a bunch of you are running it.

10-40 hurts nothing and was the standard with Japanese bikes for years.    But my first Helix, purchased in Japan market 1990, 10-30 was already being used----no harm, about the same time I kept another new Helix in states---where 10-40 was still standard.   Only thing I noticed, Japanese market bike always felt smoother......probably only in my head, or just different bikes.

Those RPM's and temps, I would use 10W-40.

Same oil goes in the scoot as in my motorcycle.
Procycle 15w50 for now.
Before Motul 5100 10w40, and Motorex 10w40. All are semi-sythetic.

Gear oil 80w90, every 6000km, currently Mobil.
