« on: May 30, 2018, 04:58:35 AM »
1-How long are tire RIMS suppose to last and

2-What sort of 'abrasions' should you be concerned about when you see them?

3-What kinds of damage can pot holes cause?

Thanks.

When you say tyre rims, do you mean the wheels?

I'd expect the wheel to outlast the bike.

Worry about cracks, if they're there I would scrap the wheel.

All sorts. Bends on the sealing edge and cracks are the common ones.

Curious, why do you ask?
You have abrasions......from the wheel doing what?

Something on my front RIM that appears to be an abrasion or 'crack' in the paint on the outside of the RIM. I haven't determined yet.

Dumb question but, did you ride it like that after it happened?

I had to limp it back to a ranger station to call a tow truck. The rim was split so the tire was flat (not holding air). Oh and I hit the pothole so hard it triggered the tip over sensor so it would barely run for a bit until it reset itself. The pothole had a abrupt edge to it, when I hit the brakes (about 40 mph) the front suspension was compressed so the tire/rim took the abuse. Doesn't look like much does it.

I once hit a hub cap at 60 mph that bent both front and rear rims such that I had to replace them. Aluminum wheels are easily cracked or bent. If it's bent your tire won't rotate perfectly even though it holds air. Replace it!

Don't take chances on dodgy tires, wheels or brakes is my motto. A broken clavicle taught me that lesson.

Photo?

Where is the photo upload option? Is the only way to first upload it to an external site and use image embed codes?

If so, how 2006.....

How much for a new front RIM?

When you reply to the thread, you'll see "Attachments and other options". Click on the arrow, and you'll see a button to browse for the image file.

That's kind of sad.  If you hadn't been on the brakes when you hit the pothole, you might have just kept on driving.

Of course, I hit a similar pothole @ 70mph, and it broke the muffler pipe, the muffler, and damaged the steering column bearings/races.

For the OP, rims "should" outlast the bike.  Only an accident, collision with road debris, a pothole, driving on flat tires, pretending its a trials bike, or the like should cause a rim replacement.  They simply don't wear, at all, in normal operation.

What do you mean by "Pretending it's a trials bike"?
