where are the bearings

OK so when trying to start the bike there is a grinding noise.but when freely spinning the rear wheel the bike is off there is no noise and spins smoothly.
any ideas what's going on here?

check the starter bendix. see if the teeth on it is worn down. and also the elec. starter its self.
