weird noise coming from rear of scooter
« on: August 06, 2014, 03:13:40 PM »
Whenever I hit around 32-33 MPH my scooter starts to make a metallic noise that sound kind of like "whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa" and gets faster as revs get higher if I try to fight through it. It sounds like it might be coming from the CVT area but I cannot pinpoint it exactly. Any ideas what this could be and if I need to take care of it before I ride it anymore? Thanks

I've had two similar sounds. One was the muffler cover and one was the kickstarter.

For the muffler cover, you can be sure all the bolts are tight, but I found the only way I permanently got rid of all remnants of the tinny sound it makes at some rpms was to take it off. You can check to see if this is your sound by putting pressure on it with your hand or a boot immediately after you start the engine before it gets too hot.

The other time I heard this sound, the kickstarter piece that folds out wasn't completely closed into the riding position and was making a metallic sound as it rattled against the center stand.

Hope it's that simple for you.

This is going to sound dumb, but I had a similar sound with my Super8 150 at about 50 mph.
I went through and checked for loose screws and bolts, and couldn't figure it out.
So I cleaned out the under seat storage compartment, so I could take it up to the dealer, and the sound magically disappeared!
Turns out, in my case, it was some of my junk vibrating against the tub under the seat so it sounded like an engine noise.

I don't know if you keep stuff under your seat all the time, but if so, take everything out and see if the noise is still there.

Hope your's turns out to be a simple thing like mine was. Keep us posted if you find the culprit for sure.
Sorry I can't be more help.

Also, I just thought, make sure that the rubber bumpers on the side stand and center stand are intact.
If one of them is missing, the stand could rattle against the frame and/or engine case.

I felt my CVT while I was riding and could feel it coming from there.

How many miles are on the scoot?
If the belt is worn down enough, it could be belt flutter from being too loose.

I had a similar sound. Took it  to my dealer and told him the passenger pegs springs were broke too. He replaced the pegs and the sound went away. I still can't believe it but the sound hasn't returned. Try taking off the passenger pegs. Here's my vid for comparison.

I dont plan on taking liability for a passenger so I took off my pegs and grab bar all together.

I would look at a loose axle nut or bad wheel bearing.

This is the exact same sound that I have. It was your passenger pegs? the springs on mine are still fully functional

It's easy to test. Two hex screws on each one and they come right off. Take them off and see if the sound goes away. I had a hard time believing my dealer but the sound is gone. It was under warranty and I got a service receipt in case it ever comes back. The thing I can't figure out is why would they fib about it? I can't see any indication that they took off the CVT cover so what am I to think? Give it a try.

Same for me on the a50. @ 28mph-34mph. Sounds like a paperclip scraping on concrete for me. If it went away, my scoot would b perfect.
