Apologies if this duplicates posts by others; I confess I did not go back through the whole archive.

Lately my scoot has been rough off the starting line, with the clutch grabbing somewhat violently a couple of times before getting moving. Worse at low rpm; I had to grab a handful to get going without drama. The best way I can describe the feel was like being in the car with a teenager learning to drive a stick. I mentioned this to a buddy who used to own a Vespa dealership and he told me my roller weights had flat spots. He also told me that as long as I was replacing the weights I should put a new belt on.

Today I spent a good three hours wrestling with the tupperware and the fasteners around the air filter and the drive case. Splitting the case involved a mallet and a pry bar as the gasket had fused to both sides of the case. And once inside I needed a decent impact driver to remove the variator nut.

Sure enough, the rollers had assymetric wear, aka "flat spots." Visible but subtle in appearance, but immediately evident when rolling them on a flat surface.

The ramps on the inside of the variator had corresponding wear marks showing the weights had been sliding in places and not rolling.

As suggested, I also replaced the belt, which hardly looked worn. Slightly different part number, with the difference being, I think, some Kevlar.

Buttoned it all back up, losing only one locking tab on the fenderr skirt, and sure enough, the problem went away entirely. I've been noticing some loss of top speed lately, too, and I am hoping that, too, will have improved, but I'm in Key West atm and I can't really get it up to full speed here.

Anyway, I hope someone finds this useful.

Hello Slwelsh!
LIKE200i - a very good scooter.
Couple quick comments:
Oh yeah, that big CVT/Belt cover is a mother to remove the first time! I nearly quit DIYing right there! I smeared a thin smear of grease when replacing.

How many miles on your LIKE? ...and the belt and rollers?

I found that my jerky/grabbing move away from stops was caused by glazed clutch pads....and by my riding style!
I'm a guy with a life-long habit of NOT abusing my machinery. Cars, scooters, ,,,braking, stopping, accelerating. Boring as H....but that's me.
I was informed by various veteran scooter riders that one must make 'brisk' pull-aways from stops on a scooter. Anything approaching a gentle, feathered approach to getting underway again will slip the clutch enough to cause it to glaze. Then, you get the nasty jerking starts.
Old hands say to hold the brakes and rev the engine to remove the glaze. Against my nature - plus it always came back!
So now I just lightly sand the clutch pads and use a different riding technique.

Now I am not a teen on the throttle when moving off - but I do shoot for brisk throttle and it's been working on my LIKE for a decade now. Just a thought.

Great photos! could we get some of your scooter and your riding areas?
We love photos...!

my first thought after reading this was glazed clutch pads and clutch bell...or likely a combination of rollers and clutch glaze. Anytime the cvt cover is off is a good time to open up the clutch and see if it needs a little sanding/deglazing, along with the  clutch bell.

Happy Scootering!

4k miles, and the rollers and belt were original.

Thanks.

As a reminder, I'm the guy who lives on a boat and thus had so much trouble removing a wheel for a tire replacement (thread here: https://www.kymcoforum.com/index.php?topic=24124.msg239421#msg239421
). So my riding area is the entire eastern half of the US within a few miles of the water, and we've also ridden them in Canada, the Bahamas, and the Turks & Caicos. Before the boat we lived in a bus with a "garage" underneath, and that riding area included all 48 of the continental US states and six states in Mexico; back then I had a People 150.

Here is a photo I happen to like, taken on a day we were moving between AirBnBs while we had to be off the boat for painting. The AirBnBs had no comfortable seating and we brought the deck chairs from the boat. Three decades of life on two wheels has equipped us to move *anything* that way. This was two years ago and I have since removed the racing stripes, which were peeling up. And my wife has ditched that Buddy for a Sym Cabo.

I'm afraid I only come to this forum when I have a problem. Either for help, as when I posted about the wheel troubles, or to share my experience as I am doing here. And of late the forum has not been cooperating; I got an email notice of replies to this thread but I've gotten nothing but database syntax errors for days trying to get back on.

This sounds like routine maintenance.  I normally replace the clutch drum and linings, and the variator weights, at the same time at about 15,000km.  They're not expensive.  This makes it like new again!

Clutch assembly,  only way sold for a Like, is @$120.
Should last 15+ thousand miles. Bell for my LIKE renewed with just greeny scrub and a cleaning.

From Amaxon or similar, had good experience with for this assy.
Try first gently deglaze, then soak with rubbing alcohol or petroleum.

Bell has to be 100%r round plus/minus 1/5 mm tolerance.

Your clutch pads seem a little skimpy.  :)(China, India?)

For sure an oversea product.
Angle of view cheats a bit and make it look asymetric.

Pad material is appr. 0.5mm thinner than OEM stuff, seems to digest heat challenges better without glazing and therefore no need to sand.

Padcarrier and spring coils as an assy come well balanced and behave quiet. Axles and circlips work precise and friction free.
