Xciting 500 / Re: Cold weather start
« on: June 01, 2015, 05:12:00 AM »
Update: it is winter again, and starting gremlin is back. It just won't start in the cold. This scoot parks outside. I have booked up the second battery again. I also setup trickle charging. Today will tell if it all worked.  Until I did he aforementioned, I had to use th e wife's car with booster cables, this was successful every time. I checked battery voltage when idling. 13.10 no lights. 12.98 with lights. Revving does not change the numbers. I read that battery should be charging at 13.8.  How to get this higher number?

I recently got my XC500EFI back from the shop, after another camshaft wore the cam down. Exhaust. This time most parts were free. A second hand head fitted too. It goes well once again. This time around it should be permanently sorted, as I am sure that after 4 times for the same fault, the shop does not want to see me again.

I have a Chinese scanner that I can use in xp through some virtual shell(I forget the name). No engine check light.

36000 km, a mix of city and freeway. Actually after a 35km freeway drive at idle above 1000 the oil lamp was flickering. The bike shop sent me a kymco manual page which states that at idle when warm, it will flicker OCCASSIONALY, but that is not the word I would use here

Yes, it is heavy.I dropped mine and needed help righting it again. Ideas to reduce weight. Get a low profile sports screen. Get rid of the top box. Remove the hand rail. Remove, or cut back the rear wheel cover. Remove the handle bar cover. Replace handle bar wrights with lightweight aluminium ones.

I also have trickle charge on during winter here in south Africa.
Scoot parks outside under net gazebo.

I am hoping the new battery will keep the morning cold start issues at bay for a while.

I have this issue with my 2010 EFI. I just bought a new battery. Charging measured at battery while idling no lights on, 13.15 volts.  I am told it should be 13.95 . I used to own a grandchild 2006 and the choke was seized solid. Check these mentioned things out.

Xciting 500 / XC500EFI after long ride, idle very low
« on: May 21, 2015, 04:17:31 AM »
XC 500 EFI.
Hi all.
I recently noticed this issue, after a long freeway ride, and then coming to a stop, the idle drops to below 1000rpm. The oil light flickers wildly.
If revs above 1000,then no oil light.
Normally idle is at 1100.
Driving around town, and the suburbs does not produce this phenomenon.

Online research shows  possible dirt on some sensor in the throttle body. Brake cleaner sprayed in there resolved that poster's issue.
What say you?

Here in south africa, xciting 500 exhaust is as scarce as a blade of grass on the moon.I fitted a BMW f800gs exhaust with adaptor to narrow the slip-on inlet to fit the old header. It worked well for a year, but is starting to get as bit loud now,as all the insulation is being burnt up.it started going brown within days of installing,so I sprayed it with high heat matt black.

Xciting 250 / Re: Combined brake system problem
« on: April 23, 2015, 05:41:26 PM »
I changed the brake cable when I raised the handlebars.500 xciting.there is a splitter on the back brakes under the front headlight,as the back brakes also work a front caliper.you should see a caliper on both sides of front wheel.I found I had to bleed the front brake first, then I went on to the back brakes. I also heard a buzzing noise when applying the brakes.dealer told me it is abs,but my model is sans abs! I don't hear that buzz anymore.
A kymco I had before, grand vista 250,had brake issue as you describe.no amount of bleeding would fix it.I had all the calipers serviced, and at that time the reservoir pump pin applied by rear brake handle was found to be worn, and it was machined and new seals fitted.
After all was fitted the squishy was still there.this time it was found to be the one seal in the rear caliper(it splits in half)had been pinched when reassembled. Brakes all sorted after that.

Hopefully this will be helpful to you.

I meant to say,did NOT make a direct accusation against the shop

This 500 was a trade in,for a kymco grand vista/dink 250 which had high oil consumption.the oil sensor cable fitting was loose from the get go.the rubber cover perished,so I finally decided to replace the original fitting with a replacement fitting from midas, but it turned out to be cr@p, so I was always squeezing it to get it to stay on.it was getting quite out of shape.it always seemed to me to be too easy to dislodge.the above history is why I did make a direct accusation against the workshop, but it does leave something to consider re their quality checking.

Update: I have the scoot back with new exhaust camshaft and oil pump. It has that wow factor again. So totally enjoying it. I am now driving slower than I used to,in order to keep the revs down,in the hope that the cams won't wear down again. File consumption remains at 18km/l . I have decided to keep the scoot, because I like the ride, the look, basically everything about it except taking the plastic off. Exhaust is a BMW 800gs or fx and gives a nice throaghty roar, only had to adjust the slip-on diameter down-size with adaptor welded on.

You might like the idea of those slip-stream add-on screens, especially the type that can be raised and lowered.they come with all the fittings required, just the scary bit of drilling into your current screen for correct fitment. I was not able to afford one,due to the exchange rate of 11:1 so made one from a used screen at cost of only 20usd.looks almost professional....☺ . The pro options are very pretty.
