Grandvista 250 / 'Total loss', says insurance. Keep for parts?
« on: September 12, 2017, 05:56:37 PM »
Got in a spill a couple weeks ago. Scraped up but okay. (2 lessons: 1, wear protective pants even in really hot weather;  2, passing is never 100% safe even if asshole in front of you signals left because they may actually turn right. Into you.

Anyway, point of this post is, insurance declared it a total loss and will reimburse me decently for it. Less $75 if I choose to keep the old one for parts. I'm tempted to do that, since the bike stood upright and rolled fine afterwards – the wheels/tires are good, battery is only a few months old, GIVI box on back is in fine shape, etc.  But, I'm not a mechanical guy and a dead bike takes up space.

What would you do?

Alternately: Any GV gurus in the Portland, Oregon area who would value it?

Grandvista 250 / Sparks when bridging solenoid: normal?
« on: May 20, 2017, 11:20:55 PM »
In an effort to diagnose my starter troubles (see http://www.kymcoforum.com/index.php?topic=24446.0), tried bypassing the key starting and jumping the solenoid:

1. Took off seat.
2. Located solenoid on right side.
3. Lifted sleeves from red and black.
4. Bridged underlying screws with screwdriver.
5. ZAP! Sparks.

Is that normal? Sparks occurred whether key was in off or on position. No start, so solenoid is working correctly, supposedly. But is sparking de rigeur?

Thanks,
Aaron

Grandvista 250 / GV house call repair in SE Portland, Oregon?
« on: May 12, 2017, 11:38:02 PM »
After unreliable starting for a while now, my GV is dead. After trickle charge or even with jump start kit, it just clicks, does not turn over.  I'm not sure how to test battery life without it running.
Any advice welcome.
Or referrals to someone who can come to my garage to fix it...  I'm so annoyed with this unreliable thing...

Thanks!

Grandvista 250 / Starting/battery problems (and jumpstarting?)
« on: December 23, 2016, 07:30:50 PM »
My battery is only 1.5 yrs old on my '08 GV250 (+6000 miles). I wiped out recently at low MPH due to gravel, and ever since I've been having problems with unreliable charging (using trickle charger / maintainer) and with starting in colder temperatures. Like, it starts up fresh off a trickle charge (although once it did not) but then after sitting a couple hours it won't start.

In fact, I had to get a AAA jumpstart last night! Frustrating (and cold).

I'm not inclined to test the still-pretty-new battery (although I don't know how to check its life), so I wonder what else could be responsible? I'm a scooter tech neophyte, so any basic help would be appreciated!

(Side question 1: I just noticed in the manual that they suggest turning off the lights before starting. I have not been doing that; is it standard practice?)

(Side question 2: I read about 'battery packs' or 'jump packs' that allow self jumpstarting in cases like this. Anyone have knowledge or recommendations on these?)

In other words, what's the maximum number of weeks or months that one can leave a scooter unused? What are the long-term risks to (a) battery and (b) scooter generally for leaving it unused for, say, 1 month?

Grandvista 250 / Kick start a Grand Vista?
« on: December 07, 2016, 04:06:07 AM »
Is there a kick start mechanism anywhere on this fine (but not reliably holding charge/starting, in my case) scooter?

Cheers,
Aaron

Grandvista 250 / Severed right rearview mirror... advice on repair?
« on: November 17, 2016, 09:32:24 PM »
Took a little spill on wet leaves just leaving my street and that was all it took for a broken right mirror. The pictures tell the story. (Scroll sideways to see all 3.)

Anyone with experience repairing this on their own? Would love to know how to save some bucks.

On another, more disconcerting note, the scooter's not starting now…

Grandvista 250 / When to start trickle charging?

Hey all. Is there a rule of thumb for how many weeks of non-use before you keep a GV on trickle charge?

Grandvista 250 / Gear oil level?
« on: November 10, 2015, 01:00:23 AM »
I need to check my gear oil since the shop that changed it has left it with a small leak.
The repair manual says "The oil level shall be at the oil check blowhole." I assume they mean that when you remove the oil check bolt, you can just see the oil inside, and if it's visible toward the top, you're good to go.

Am I right with this?

Grandvista 250 / Spark plug assessment?
« on: September 12, 2015, 12:54:24 AM »
How important is the maintenance schedule as far as spark plug replacing?
I think I'm due (at the 3100 mile mark). Going to take a look as soon as I can get in there, but if it looks fine (no deposits, cracks, wear) then is it fine to leave it or do you all replace everything religiously according to schedule?

(Also I've no idea how to measure the spark plug gap but I haven't researched it much yet.)

Grandvista 250 / Oil change - order of filter, etc.?
« on: September 03, 2015, 01:02:32 AM »
So now that I'm at the 3000 mile mark, I decided it's time to change the oil. I managed to drain it but it was messy! Nice new oil spot in the garage... And I got confused with the parts. The spring came out right away, of course, but after  mostly all the oil was drained I thought, hey, isn't there supposed to be a mesh filter in here? And lo, fishing around in there with my finger I first found a washer, and then behind that, the filter which I had to turn many times to get out. (I'd expected everything to just come right out with the plug/cap.)

Now the question is, do I have the order right? The washer has me confused. I'm assuming the washer has to be first, followed by the filter, spring and cap. Is that right? (See attached image for disassembled parts.)

Also it's okay to just leave it all open and draining overnight, right?

p.s. Thanks to Carter for the oil type advice! [Note to others: 15W-40, API SM, is just fine, and it can say 'diesel' on the container.]

Grandvista 250 / Backrest removed: what to cover the 3 holes with?
« on: August 27, 2015, 04:25:20 PM »
Former owner did this for me and just put in bolts with washers covering the holes. But I fear water will seep through them if the bike's exposed to rain. Anyone have a better solution?

Is it possible to RSS subscribe only to one of the sub-forums, rather than the entire site?

Thanks in advance!
