Technical | How To / xc250 air filter
« on: August 18, 2013, 11:07:40 PM »
Getting the filter housing off this bike was a PITA, but I suppose typical for a bike with tupperware.  I ordered this filter about one month ago and received it yesterday... shame on Kymco for making me wait.

Anyway, this is what an air filter looks like after seven years and 6400 miles.  Throttle response is significantly better with the new filter, especially off idle.  Don't wait so long to change yours:

Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / Working on slow speed control
« on: August 09, 2013, 09:38:09 PM »
I put my foot down, suddenly, hopefully for the last time in a parking lot.  This heavy scoot with its CVT is taking some time to get used to, and so this afternoon I set out to practice slow speed maneuvers, scooter style, revving the engine to keep the clutch engaged while dragging the rear brake.  It feels awkward but dangit I am determined to get this mastered.  More practice practice practice.

General Discussion / Iridium. Really??
« on: July 30, 2013, 03:31:39 AM »
I went to the auto parts store for an iridium plug, they didn't have it in stock and had to order it,  so I bought a standard NGK to tide me over.  The bike did run a little smoother with the new plug.

Today the iridium came in, so I swapped it out.  Filled up the tank and spent the day running errands.  The bike is considerably smoother and more responsive.  Put 137 miles on today, much of it WOT going 75 mph gps on the freeway, but mostly country roads with a little bit of in-town. Pretty typical day.

My fuel economy increased 10 mpg!!  Is that possible?  I've put 1,000 miles on the bike over the last month, and every tank has come in around 60, sometimes 62 or 63 mpg.  This time it was 70.

General Discussion / Linked-brakes learning curve
« on: July 13, 2013, 02:47:58 PM »
My '06 XC has linked rear brake and front left disc brakes on the left lever.  As a former motorcycle rider I have been treating this lever gingerly, as I would a rear brake pedal but recently had an aha moment when realized I should be using equal pressure on both right and left levers.  I'll weigh in with my observations later but would first like to hear from some more experienced scooter riders as to how this system should be properly used.

Xciting 250 / Givi Airstar Windscreen
« on: July 09, 2013, 03:36:34 AM »
Installed the tall one today.  As can be seen by the pictures, it has mirror cut-outs that allow the bars to turn fully lock to lock, without modification.

The screen is pretty tall, and it comes quite close to the rider as it follows the rakish angle of the fairing.  I'm 6'2" so can see over the top when sitting up straight (like we were taught in fifth grade  :) ) so will leave as-is for the time being.

I cut my teeth riding a Honda Custom back in the mid eighties with a full windscreen, and always had bikes with them, so it is a relief to finally have some protection from the wind and bugs.  This scooter is now a much more pleasant ride.

Xciting 250 / Bring a new owner up to speed
« on: June 18, 2013, 04:11:09 AM »
Hi guys, I couldn't find an intro section here, forgive me if misstep.

Today I picked up a clean 2006 Xciting 250 with 5K on the clock, somewhat impulsive but at 1800.00 it seemed like a good deal.

There are a couple of maintenance items I need to complete right away, as the seller bought it used from a dealer two years and 500 miles ago and "thinks" the dealer took care of everything up to that point.

A couple of quick questions:

The Kymco driver's manual shows no oil filter for the 250, only the 500.  Is this right?

I want to replace the rear tire, and possibly the front.  Tread is ok but the rear is worn flat, which I assume is effecting low speed handling.  I've always run Dunlop Elite's on my motorcycles, but is there a preferred tire for this bike?  I'm going to teach my teenage boys to ride this thing, so no Cheng Shin's.   ::)

Thanks in advance.
