General Discussion / Like 150i vs Liberty vs Smax vs Hooligan
« on: August 24, 2018, 04:56:51 PM »
I plan on getting a replacement for my Super 8 in the next 3 to 6 months.  the Like 150i is the top contender right now but the Liberty 150, Smax and Hooligan 170i are all still contenders.

My Super 8 has been one of the most fun bikes I have owned but it's getting old and many newer scooters have better performance and features.  I have about 31,500 miles on my Super 8.

The contenders:

Like 150i.  This scooter seems like a big step up in performance and features for a really low price.
Likes:  Styling, performance, fuel filler not under the seat.  Disc brakes front and rear with ABS. Good underseat storage, best price.
Cons:  Nearest dealer 2 hours away, seating a bit cramped, Still new and no long term reviews, Limited cornering clearance?

Smax.
Likes.  Best performing 150 class scooter, Great local dealer, Yamaha quality and reliability, front and rear disc brakes, fuel filler not under seat, tachometer, great underseat storage, largest fuel tank of these scooters, handles like a small sportbike.
Cons.  Cramped seating, heaviest 150 class scooter, will there be a 2019 model?  I don't like the 2018 black.

Liberty.
Likes:  Great Styling, I fit on it OK.  Seems comfortable, great fuel mileage, front ABS
Cons.  Nearest dealer 2 hours away, underseat fuel filler, uses premium fuel.

Hooligan 170i.
Likes:  Most comfortable for me, great local dealer, good suspension, fuel filler not under seat, front and rear disc brakes.
Cons.  Marginal performance increase over Super 8, overheating issues?  Smallest fuel tank of these scooters.

Some other considerations for me are ease of maintenance and I hate linked brakes.  Because of these I'm not really considering the PCX but there are changes to the 2019 model so maybe?  The only one of these I have ridden is the Smax.  I can easily get a test ride on the Hooligan but I'm not sure about the others.  Big wheels vs small wheels is not an issue for me as long as they are at least 12"

Any thoughts about these scooters or any other suggestions?

General Discussion / Lunch with Crossbolt
« on: August 19, 2018, 01:28:55 AM »
It's always nice to be able to actually meet someone that I have interacted with on a forum.  I have met dozens of people that way over the years but today was the first time meeting someone on this forum.  Crossbolt was in town so we met for lunch.  We met at the Blue Plate Cafe in Huntsville.  The food was great.  We enjoyed the food and continued to talk for quite a while.  We had a lot in common beyond this forum.  We talked for over 2 hours and could easily have spend two more.

My Kymco is temporarily out of service with a dead battery so I rode my Yamaha Majesty.

This parking lot was packed when we got there but by the time we left the lunch crowd was all gone.

Karl, it was great meeting you today.  Hopefully our paths will cross again.

Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / A Kymco and two Groms walk into a bar...

Well not exactly.  I just thought it would make a catchy title.  A better title might have been "A kymco and two Groms go for a ride."  I had the chance recently to meet a couple riding across the USA on two Groms and ride with them for a while.

My Super 8 and the 125cc Groms have pretty similar performance.  We might have been slow but still got stuck behind even slower traffic so we pulled over to let the traffic get down the road.

We made a few more stops and took some pictures.

and I knew I had to take a picture and post it here.

Last week I headed up to Ohio to visit my parents and help them with some stuff that needed to be done around their house.  They are in their 80s and can't do all the stuff they used to be able to do.  Last time I visited them I got a bad case of PMS from not riding for a week.  This time I took along my Super 8 so that I could do a little riding.  I brought my smallest bike because the speed limits are really low in the North east and enforcement really high.

On Sunday I got out for an hour or two in the morning and rode out to Gates Mills.

.

That afternoon a storm passed through with a cold front behind it.  It would be cooler that week than the week before which had some 90 degree days.

The weather cleared up and temperatures were in the 60s so I headed out for another ride that evening.

Eventually all these rusty old bridges will be replaced but I think they are cool and will be sad to see them go.

Probably quite a few.

For the third time I got to participate in a really fun event put on by the Alabama Traffic Safety Center.

This event is held about 130 miles from my house.  I did it the first time on my Aprilia Sport City 250.  Then I did it next time on my Kawasaki Versys.  I really wanted to do it this time on my Super 8.  It's a two hour ride on the interstate but that was not a practical idea for my Super 8.  Also it was forecast to be below freezing in the morning so....

I drove most of the way, parked in a Wally World parking lot, unloaded the scooter and rode the rest of the way.  The ride was about 15 miles of nice back roads.

I have always enjoyed this event but this time was the most fun.  A lightweight scooter is the best way to do this.

I let a friend try out my Super 8

More pics on a different course.  They had four courses ranging from beginner to expert.

I don't have any video of me but here is one of a really good rider on the expert course:

Let's see how many states the members of this forum have ridden a scooter in.  If there are no pictures then it didn't happen so here are the rules:

The 50 states in alphabetical order are: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

You must post a picture taken in that state and it must include the scooter you were riding in that state.  After the picture, post the name of the next state.  If no one posts for 24 hours we will skip that state and move on.  Lets see how many states we can get and how fast we can do this.  After we finish the states we'll open it up to everyone and see how many countries we can do.

I'll start things with the first state on the list, Alabama

My super 8 at the space museum in Huntsville, Alabama.

Alaska is next.

It was nearly 70 degrees today in the Rocket City so I rode my Super 8 out to this spot to catch the sunset.

General Discussion / Around the World on my Super 8 150
« on: October 31, 2016, 04:46:51 PM »
It's 24,901 miles around the Earth at the equator. The Odometer on my Super 8 just rolled over that number about an hour ago. Not bad for a 150cc, 10.3 HP, air cooled scooter. It took me just under 6 years to do it.  That's about 4200 miles per year which is not that much but I do have three other bikes that I also ride.
