Super 8 150 / replacement belt for the s-8
« on: August 29, 2011, 01:24:27 PM »
My owners manual calls for inspection of the drive belt at 4200 miles.  I don't know much about CVT drive belts.  I have a couple of questions.

1.  How long do the original belts normally last.  Should I expect to replace it at 4200?

2.  What is the best replacement belt?  I want something that will last, not the cheapest belt.

I have watched a U tube video on replacing the belt.  It doesn't look too complicated.  Any personal experience with belt replacement?

While I'm in there, should I inspect the rollers?  How often do they need replacement?

Anything else I should check?

General Discussion / A different kind of ride on my scooter.
« on: May 06, 2011, 11:51:12 AM »
When I got my Super 8 I expected to use it to commute to work, go shopping, and generally have fun on it.  Yesterday I went on a ride different from any I have done in the past.  It was very sobering experience: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=647784&page=10

General Discussion / 250 for 2 up riding, which one?
« on: April 19, 2011, 10:11:41 PM »
Less than 5 month's after getting my first scooter, I am already thinking of getting another one.  I would like to get something comfortable to take my wife on day rides and also to be able to do some long distance commuting.  I do two 175 mile rides each week.  Almost no interstate, mostly 55 or 65 MPH speed limits.  There seem to be some good deals on 09 and 10 leftover Grand Vista's and Xciting 250s.  I'm guessing I could also get a good deal on a People 250s.  I haven't ridden any of them but have looked at them and sat on them and did a little research.  Here's my thoughts:

Xciting 250RI - $4500   Very comfortable but heavy and large for a 250.

Grand Vista 250 - $3999.  Great passenger seat and storage but cramped for me (I'm 6-2)

People 250s - haven't seen one on sale.  Sportiest of the bunch but not as comfortable passenger seat.

For those of you who have one of these, what are your thoughts.  What kind of speed will these run at and what king of MPGs?  If you carry a passenger, how comfortable is the passenger?

General Discussion / Super 8 invisible to radar?
« on: April 15, 2011, 01:13:34 AM »
I was out riding today and rode past one of those radar speed signs.  There was a car right behind me so I pulled a U turn and went past it when there was no traffic.  It didn't show any speed at all.  Maybe the super 8 has the newest stealth technology and we can all speed at will ;D

Super 8 150 / My first Super 8 performance mod
« on: April 01, 2011, 08:48:20 PM »
I just did the first performance mod to my Super 8.  I recently took it to Deals Gap and rode a bunch of twisty roads.  I discovered that the biggest hurdle to going fast was not lack of power, lack of grip for the Chen Shin tires or the brakes.  It was lack of cornering clearance, particularly on the right.  The first thing that touches down on the right is the metal tab the side stand mounts to, see picture below.

I got a $10 grinding wheel for my drill from Harbor Freight and used it to grind off some of that metal tab.
That tab touches down hard and digs in.  I not only removed some metal but also angled it so it is less likely to dig into the road.

Eventually I want to try to get even more cornering clearance since the Floorboard touches down on the left side and I can't grind that off.  I'm thinking that some larger/ taller tires would help.

Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / I ran US129 at Deals Gap
« on: March 29, 2011, 09:16:01 PM »

US129 at Deals Gap.  I'm not sure it's the most exciting ride in the Smokies but it it is the most well known.  Actually, due to it's fame it is usuelly so crowded it's a pretty slow and boring ride.  I used to ride it a lot, back before it was crowded and everyone started to call it the Dragon.  To me, it will always be Deals Gap.  I had the opportunity to go there for a weekend recently.  I figured that being March, it might not be to crowded.  I was right.  I rode through Deals Gap 10 times as well as riding some of the surrounding roads.

Here's some pictures I took of Deals Gap:

General Discussion / Scooter Riding Gear
« on: March 09, 2011, 07:40:25 PM »
Riding gear is one area where there are many opinions with some people preaching ATGATT on one extreme and others riding in shorts and flip flops on the other.  I don't want to start another ATGATT debate.  First of all, if you don't wear full racing leathers every time you ride, you're not really ATGATT.  Almost everyone makes some concessions to comfort, practicality, style, and cost when deciding what to wear when riding.

My personal philosophy is: The Appropriate gear for the occasion (AGFTO???).  I don't dress the same for a trip to the store as I would for a sport ride, or a ride on a dirt bike.  I dress differently in hot weather than in cold weather.  I tend to dress differently on the scooter than I do on one of my motorcycles because typically I ride my scooter in a different environment and for different reasons.

Like I'm sure many of you do, I often ride my scooter on short trips where I will be getting off my scooter at my destination and doing something else like going into a store, going to work or going for a hike.  For this I need gear that is practical off of the scooter or is easy to take off and on and can fold small enough to be practically stored.  And of course, I'm cheap and don't like to spend more than I have to on my gear.

The purpose of this thread is to discuss what gear works for you, not to discuss how much gear everyone else should wear.  We all have to make our own decisions as to how much risk we are willing to take by not wearing ATGATT.  I suspect that if cost, practicality, comfort, and style were not a problem, most riders would wear more safety gear.

I'll start with some of my gear.

Helmet:

When I got my Scooter I decided to get a new helmet since my full face helmet was about 10 years old and I wanted to try a modular helmet.  The dealer sold my a Fulmer I-shade for $100.  Retail is $150 so it is fairly inexpensive.

It's modular, has flip down tinted visor, and is probably the most comfortable helmet I have owned.  It is also the most noisy.  I normally wear ear plugs but sometimes go without earplugs on short rides.  With this helmet, it's earplugs all the time.

I picked a some new gloves recently at Cycle Gear.

The glove on the left are Frank Thomas Storm Gloves.  Waterproof, fairly warm and very comfortable.  They were on sale for $35 and I later saw them for $25.  The gloves on the right are Motoboss and were $15.  You don't have to spend a lot to get some pretty decent gear.

Next, an old pair of Joe Rocket jeans.

No longer in production, I love these overpants.  With full length side zippers I can put these on or take them off in about 15 seconds and don't have to remove my boots.  The material is waterproof but the zippers are not.  They fold up smaller than a regular pair of jeans.  They are perfect for extra protection and warmth when I want to be able to remove them easily at my destination and store them under my seat.

More to come later.  Lets see what works for you.

Technical | How To / Glass fuses
« on: February 25, 2011, 08:41:17 PM »
I have been trying to get some spare fuses for my Super 8.  The dealer didn't have any and said they have been trouble getting them.  Wal mart doesn't carry the short glass fuses.  I stopped at a Napa Auto Parts store.  They could sell me to separate kits of 5 fuses each.  One has a 7.5 amp fuse and one has a 10 amp.  The rest of the fuses are useless to me.  over $10 for two tiny fuses seems a little much to me.  Any ideas where I could get just the fuses I need.  I need a 7 amp and a 10 amp.  I like to have spares on hand but don't want to buy a bunch of fuses I don't need.

Super 8 150 / Magnetic Drain Plug?
« on: January 20, 2011, 02:29:05 AM »
Anyone know where to get a magnetic drain plug for the Super 8 ?  With no oil filter I would feel better having a Magnetic drain plup to catch metal particles.

Technical | How To / Scooter Tool Kit
« on: January 03, 2011, 05:27:30 PM »
I recently bought my first scooter, a Super 8 150.  Like most motorcycles, the stock toolkit doesn't have much in it.  One of the first things I did was put together a toolkit with a few more things in it.  I mostly used the tools from the stock toolkit and added some stuff I had laying around.  It's not a finished product.  I will be adding or changing some things.  My goal is to have the proper tools to be able to handle some common roadside emergencies, I'm not planning to ride through the Darien Gap or anything.  Here's a pic of what I have so far:

The stuff in the baggie is a couple of CO2 cartridges wrapped in a rag.

I still need to get some spare fuses, a tire pressure guage and a small first aid kit.  Some other things I may get:
Needle nose pliers
Adjustable wrench
Duct tape
A different bag

Any one have any other suggestions.

If you have put together a tool kit, this would be a good thread to post what you have.

General Discussion / Help me decide on a scooter
« on: November 18, 2010, 07:19:58 PM »
This is my first post on this forum.  I have never owned a scooter.  My scooter riding experience consists of two days on a rented Riva 125 in Hawaii over 20 years ago and a short ride on a reflex 250 about 7 years ago.  I am trying to decide between a people 150, people 200 and super 8 150.  I will mainly be using it to commute & ride around town but will occasional take some rides into the country and into the Smoky mountains.  I do like to ride aggresively in the curves so handling and ground clearance is important.  The local dealer has great deals on all three.  Any inputs would be appreciated especially on performance and ease of maintenance.  I plan on doing most of my own maintenance.
