Side By Side / Most miles/hrs on a 450
« on: April 17, 2018, 11:47:57 AM »
Like the title asks. Wondering who has the most miles and hours on a 450 with nothing but normal maintenance? Asking you UTV guys because there seems to be 10 times as many of you as the ATV owners.

I gave you the link to Arctic Cat's 300 service manual. It calls for 70ft lbs. It also gave the procedure for pulling and reinstalling the drive belt and cvt system. I would recommend reading it. It is only a few pages down from the top when you open the link.

Not sure on the 270 but I seriously doubt it is much lower than our MXU450. The MXU 450 calls for 147ft. lbs. of torque and also requires red locktite. It may very well be working it's way loose. Which if it does come off can be terrible and cause a lot of damage inside the housing. I recommend you shut it down until you have time to get locktite  and torque it much higher. I don't like guessing on those numbers but Arctic Cat also sells the 270 under their name. You may very well find more information about the 270 searching under Arctic Cat online. It would be shocking to find that the CVT was any different. I am running an Arctic Cat XC450 cvt sheaves that have been machined for faster acceleration in my MXU 450. I would also leave the cover off and either block it up or ride it yourself and look over the CVT system to make sure everything is right, Then install the cover. I would not allow anyone else to ride it with the cover off as that can be dangerous.

Let me edit that, Arctic Cat calls it as a 300 but it is the Kymco 270 motor, drivetrain.

That should give you the information you need for torque values, it is considerably lower than the 450 but higher than 30-40. Hope that helps you out some. Only other thing I can think of is maybe it needs to break in some. The speed should be 38 with the drive boss you installed. I have a niece with the Kymco 300. I'll try to get up with them and see what theirs will do.

Seeing the picture it would look like the two thick washers would be removable. Is that not so? The 270 is a fairly new model so a lot of information on the forum is not available because there is not that many around yet. I can't imagine why just changing out the boss causes it to start making a rattling/knocking sound if reinstalled properly. Did you makes sure the belt was not pinched when torqueing it down? Did you make sure all the roller weights were held in place when reinstalling?

That part you ordered would seem to be the correct boss to derestrict it. You would want the sheaves to go closer together to raise top speed. It doesn't pinch the belt as the weights when spun push the sheaves together and the belt rides up the sheaves to raise the gearing higher. Why don't you try this. Remove the cover on the cvt. Block the rear wheels up and test run it some and see what is causing the knocking. You can also check for full belt travel.

Good to know. You got it back together?

Should have known better? Kymco made the Arctic Cat 90 you traded in. Any spacer limiting the top speed will be keeping the two sheaves from coming together. Your 90 had to have been derestricted to run 30.

I would have to wonder if the guy thinks that is the problem why he doesn't install a fuel pump first. Wouldn't it be so much easier to sell an AYV running than broken down? Wouldn't it be worth so much more money running than not?  It may be that simple but I would ponder a guess the odds are stacked against you.

Not as easy as I thought it would be. The exhaust runs right by it. I can see the hole but not inside it. tried to take a picture with my phone, it wants to focus on the exhaust. If it is threaded I would say an allen screw is countersunk in it because it is pretty small. Try again with a mirror and my glasses.

Tried again with glasses, mirror and strongest LED flashlight I have, It is a bad angle to view. If there is anything threaded in there it is recessed just enough I can not see it. If you have the cylinder head off is it threaded?

It's dark now but if I can remember I see if I can find it tomorrow on my MXU 450.

Guys, unless your 500 and 400 are way different than the 450 it is fairly easy to remove the tank plastic and fuel tank. You may very well need to check valve clearance anyways.

Check battery first, then connections and grounds.

You have taken "cheap belts" to a whole new level. Had no idea anyone made any CVT drive belt that cheap. Sure your not using a fan belt for a car?  Get a known name brand belt designed for the 150 and you will most likely be fine. I would also look a new set of roller weights while your at it. No need to dig in to change a belt and leave flat spotted rollers in place.

You may have to pull it and measure. Then punch the numbers in this sight here:https://www.bearing-king.co.uk/bearings/all-bearings
Bearings are generally pretty standard and bought by most every manufacture. Not brand specific such as Kymco, Yamaha or Honda for example.

Electrical troubleshooting can be trying at best. Middle daughter just called a little ago. No AC at her house. Got lucky, or so I thought, and found three wires that had chaffed on the edge of the blower housing. Separated them, wrapped them with three layers of electrical tape and we have compressor running and no blower. Only 83 in her house. She's going to have to call an AC repair guy. That was the limit of my knowledge. Hope you have better success, lol!
