May Is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month
« on: May 06, 2022, 02:20:27 PM »
"According to the MSF, scooter and new motorcycle sales were up 14.2 percent in 2021, marking the second year in a row that sales figures have grown. Since 2019, sales have improved by 21.8 percent. Add to that a 48 percent increase in enrollment in rider training programs in 2021 over 2020 and you have all the fixings for more riders on the road. Many of these riders are likely to be new as well, increasing the need for heightened vigilance across the board."

I watched a lengthy series of Instagrams yesterday involving motorcycle riding in the USA. Each clip was of a motorcycle rider involved in a collision.

Once again - I saw that 98% of the time the rider was at fault.....poor judgement, too much speed - which to me equals lousy riding "skills".

Riders just showing no ability to imagine what this style of riding is leaving them vulnerable to. Then it happens - and they act surprised. It's not the tires - it's their brain which let them down.

yep, speed, skills (or lack of) and situational awareness...plus a lack of safety gear for many...all add up.

I think situational awareness (which includes proper lane positioning, awareness of threats, traffic ahead, behind and to the sides) probably plays the greatest part in rider safety. Youve gotta have the skills, and the gear, but being aware of danger and avoiding it in the first place will help keep you safe.

The MSF course that I took in Rhode Island was one of the best prep courses that I had. It is definitely worth the money and it is the law here to have taken it in order to get the M on the driver's license.

While riding, the most important distance is the six inches between both ears.  ;)

untraveled back roads and hi-vis gear is my first line of defense... for instance, I ran some errands today, for the most part, didn't see another vehicle, till I got to that last quarter mile of necessary traffic, over 50 miles and saw 4 pickup trucks and nothing else

I always ride in the right hand lane as well as wearing a half helmet, high visibility vest and a Helmet lamp when it is either dark or raining and still people have tried to hit me. Bottem line, make yourself known when on the road Keep the speed limit and obey all traffic laws, Having a motorcycle licence is a must, they teach you skills you never thought you might have known, Plus it makes for a fun weekend. Our instructor taught us that you are always a target when on a bike. Drive defensivly and stay safe.
