I like train pics, and, trackage pics, too, I guess !

I might disagree with photographer John Sanderson...

IMO, which I think is typical, would be that trains are good for moving a lot of weight a long distance, and little else.
We don't use trains to the degree they do in Europe for commuters.

I will review the series of pics again, yet I don't feel they represent America's National character.
We might use a train once every 3 or 4 years, mostly for entertainment purposes, and are surprised each time with views we have never seen before.  Not typical views of the America we know !

Sanderson's photos are some neato artistic work, though...

We move things by truck, and commute by auto.

I was referring to the article as I read BBC News frequently. America has lots of train history. In California we have Amtrack and Metro in use but there are old scenic ones too.

MJR, This is possibly my favorite of the 'fun ones'...



There's a bunch of them, rail bikes, karts, speeders...  domestic and overseas.  All fun!

...Might be a good option for one of these scooters I've gathered which might not ever see licensed street use again

Been there East of the Salton Sea, the Bradshaw Trail goes under that trestle. I've thought about making a lightweight foldable bicycle rig to ride some of those old tracks.

It would be fun to give a try...  construction would be dependent upon condition and overgrowth on the track...

I do have a pile of bicycles for parts and a ryobi 4 cycle string trimmer engine to power one !
Now I need to get a round tuit !

Don't know about elsewhere, but here in the Pacific NW, a lot of the now unused tracks are being converted to walking/biking trails. Some of the trestles are pretty spectacular, and those railways offer a new and seldom seen vistas. Great use of the old rail beds, if you ask me. I just wish they would let us scooter riders on them!
