Oil filter cover's screws..... Warning!!
« on: August 02, 2012, 06:49:43 AM »
Warning....
While changing the oil filter, this is what happend when the cover screws were tighten at the requested torque (8.6 ft.lb)  >:(
I got super lucky as there was enough thread to unscrew it with a plier.

Changed them for some much stronger ones obviously.

I never, never tighten bolts at recommended torque. I just seat it, tighten a bit, then tighten 1/4 turn. Old school, but it works.

However, I think your case is an isolated one (I hope)... Maybe just a bad bolt...

Yea I don't use torque values either, from tightening so many bolts on different machines, I go by feel.

Not sure I can trust myself with tightening by feel ;-)

I guess.... :-\ ;D

First lesson then, how much torque is hand tight (with a screwdriver)? 5 ft.lb?

Whose arm? ;D ;D ;D

try to experiment.... tighten with a torque wrench and try to further tighten with your hand and see if the bolt still moves, then you can estimate from there. Do this several times to get the average feel...
