Shingles vaccine
« on: November 21, 2018, 10:16:39 PM »
The new for 2018, two-part, very effective Shingrix injection is currently on national back-order.
I hope that our members who are seniors will discuss this with their physicians -- and give some thought to putting themselves on the waiting list.

I had shingles about a year ago
« Reply #5 on: November 22, 2018, 12:56:17 PM »
ended up at the emergency room. I had shingles in my groin area and lower back. The pain was so severe I could not set at my kitchen table. I had to lay in bed. After four or five days of this, my blood pressure dropped real low. I was not eating nor drinking enough fluids. I got dehydrated. I was experiencing renal failure. My kidney function was down 25%. A doctor told my wife this situation can kill.
I finally got over the shingles and my doctor suggested that I should consider the "shingles shot". I checked on it and the shot was going to cost $300-$400 out of pocket. My insurance company would not pay a penny toward the shot. I passed on the shot because of cost. Later, I found out the "shingles shots" were causing people serious health problems.
Now I don`t know what to do.
Before this happened I did not know shingles could cripple a person with extreme pain.

About 9 months before this, I had a bout with kidney stones. The pain was so bad a shot of morphine did not stop the pain. When I passed the stone. it felt like someone had shot me my my lower abdomen with a small caliber hand gun. That is how painful it was.
I hope I never have shingles or kidney stones again.

There has to be an award for Boo! Miserable story well told! Wife had a bout with shingles. Much agony. Faced with the same insurance deal and she would not cough up the stiff payment no matter how much I insisted. Probably a blessing since the known side effects are so terrible. Plus she is on so many meds from these quacks who knows what the cumulative would be. I think she is ALREADY into cumulative effects. My opinion of MD's is about the same as it is about some "mechanics."

at my recent physical  my Doc suggested I get the shingles vaccine as it was recently approved for people 50 and over...a drop from the original recommendation for those only 60 and older.  My Dad had a bout with shingles and I remember him telling me it was one of the most painful things he's ever endured in his life. I'll bite the bullet and get it whenever the vaccine is available.

Please consider discussing the Shingrix vaccine with a trusted geriatric physician.
Some insurances pay all but $80 of the two shot treatment.
Folks who have some experience with shingles would gladly pay 10X that to not have had that experience.
I spoke on a Weds. eve with a close relative who was being driven to the hospital.. He was in his usual good humor in spite of the shingles rash on his face.
Friday night it had worsened. 20mins after saying good night to his wife, he died of a heart attack.
He had had the much less effective previous shingles shot.
