Speaking of smaller I just ran across a non running 2010 Sunny 50cc with 600 miles on it for $250 but after some research the owner let the registration lapse two years. I called DMV to find out the cost to bring it current (would be due again in Sept) was $334 or more than the asking price plus having to determine what will it take to get it running (maybe a flush/carb cleaning) and I'm not sure the pricing is so good anymore. I might get the fees reduced but that may or may not happen, hmm what to do.

In Colorado, it's $5.75 to register a 50cc scooter for 3 years. You're getting screwed by your DMV.

It's California we always get screwed. The registration here is based on the original sales price and remains the same for the first two years and then starts dropping. Keep in mind the $334 was for two years plus penalties. Had the owner non oped it with DMV there would be no fees or penalties just title transfer and current registration.

Worse than that I bought a set of tires on a buy three get one free deal but the state still charges me sales tax as if I paid for that fourth tire and cell phones bought under contract here I have to pay the sales tax based on the full retail price of the phone even though it's worked into my cell phone bill for two year costing me nothing more than the service I use.

Yes...but you have the Big Sur and the PCH, and San Francisco sour dough bread and Nob Hill and Union Square, and the Pan Handle, Haight/Ashbury, and The Tenderloin and the dented-can store ! All those places I loved as an 18 yr old living rough! (eventually I landed a position as the Head Cook for a chess hustler in H./A. - high point of some days was opening those labeless cans to see what we were having for dinner! )

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

I moved from CA four years ago and while it has a lot to offer, I don't miss the crowds or cost of living including the high DMV fees and penalties.

Indeed like Death Valley, the Sierra Nevadas, Mojave, Ocotillo, and more. Sounds like quite the life you've had. One of these days I'll pull up and move out. I've had several friends do so over the years and the housing prices are at the bubble price again from years ago (I still can't believe what my house is worth now).

Lived in Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Manhattan Beach, Costa Mesa, Santa Cruz, Ben Lomond, San Jose, Palo Alto, Mountain View and Sacramento. Left in 89 and moved to Texas. Have a son and 2 grandchildren in San Diego. Loved our ride up the Coast Hwy. from SD to Huntington Beach on our Burgman 400. Rode it up to Julian too for their world famous apple pie. CA. is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there now. We live in a cabin in the woods with 22 chickens, 6 dogs and a Peahen (female peacock). I love my space and solitude.
