new horn?
« on: April 30, 2016, 05:04:09 PM »
I was forced to use my horn yesterday, yep, car driver!! luckily I was only doing about 15mph when she decided she wanted to go in front of me without letting me know first!!
a couple off blasts (toots!!) of my pathetic little horn and she had a rethink!!
anyway, I was wondering if anyone has upgraded their horns and has any recommendations please?

this is what I have been looking at.

cheers,
Don.

Looking at reviews they say it is a bit bigger than the stock one so you may have to relocate. Also it draws 13.5 amps so it will need its own power supply line and relay for activation.

Thanks for the reply TANWare, maybe just a little too much work with my limited electrical knowledge! And space is certainly at a premium in the nose area!
Another couple of manufacturers came up in the search, PIAA and FIAMM, I will search a little bit more I think!
Cheers,
Don.

I have the Wolo air horn,  and It is big, to big for the same place as the old horn,  I am looking for a good place to put it, got the front end off, and I may put it under the ignition switch on the right side,.  there is a space inside there, will have to glue a bracket to mount it on,   ABS glue is strong , I hope,    one other spot is on the outside just over the rad.  behind the front wheel,.  don't know how long it would last there , are they water tight,

Even louder dual horns may be a big help. I rarely ever get to use the horn, my first thought e ver is to do a defensive move and by the time I get to the horn the event is over.

hey De Dee, had a look at those wolo bad boys, much the same appearance wise as the stebel nautilus, but it says in the description that you only have to swap the wires from old to new, is that right?

TANWare, I know what you mean! I usually blast (toot) my starter motor at them!! its an age thing!!  ;D ;D ;D

For what it is worth, I used a Wolo from Harbor Freight on the DT and it is bigger and requires an offset to bolt NEAR where the original squeeky horn went. It is WAY louder than original and sounds great! It does require a #12 wire from battery and a fuse, of course, and a relay since it draws more current than the original. It is not hard to rig but does take some time. If I was not such a dunce about getting pictures on here I would have posted it when doing it. I thought it was worth it.

I just pluged the same wires on it ,. and don't play with the horn , it would get the wires hot, quick blast and it is OK.  safest though is # 12 wire from the battery with a relay and fuse

If the wires are getting hot not only is it unsafe but it means the wires are acting as resistors. The horn is not as fast acting or loud as it can be either.

hello again guys, I bought these as a tester, at a tad over £5 I thought I would give them a go.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400844812035?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I installed them last night and they sound brilliant and loud, but, there is always a but isn't there!!
this morning whilst showing off to wifey, the first couple of blasts were perfect, she pooed herself!! (only kidding!!) on the third blast one of the horns sounded flat/ muted, I don't know what the problem is/ was and I was hoping one of you guys knew what is wrong?
any ideas gratefully received!!
thanks for your help.
cheers,
Don.

Hello Don. Chances are good that one of your horns is contacting part of the scooter body giving it that "squished" sound. Check around your horns to make sure you have some clearance then re-test it. I had the same problem myself.

Mr Paul, you were right! opened the front and checked, and sure enough one of the horns was touching the framework. so I relocated one of the horns, see picture.
it now sounds amazing!
I have uploaded a short video to YouTube.

Love the sound and not trying to minimize your work, but other drivers may not be able to tell it's you, on a scooter, honking at them.

I've sort of learned this because I have a scooter horn on my bicycle and sometimes jay walking pedestrians don't figure out it's me honking at them and will walk right out in front of me with my horn blaring.
