x500 wont start
« on: June 30, 2012, 07:37:42 AM »
Hi Everybody!

I'm new member and happy to find this forum. I live in Hungary and thats one of my problems  ;D, I hope you can help me.

So the situation. Xciting 500, 2005, carb, 28000km. And it won't start :-( The starter works (I've changed it a new one), spark OK, carb clean, valve clearence 0.1mm, AC OK.

Ignition problem?
Compression?

So, my new mechanic try to manage the problem, but I think its too complicated for him ???

I know this sounds stupid, but check the easy stuff first. Is the side/kick stand up? Is the kill switch off? Are you pulling in the left hand break? I mention these as you did not say if you just got the bike, or have had it a wile? The fuel pump could be bad? If you can here the fuel pump go click click click when you turn the key on first thing in the morning, then the pump is probably fine. Take off gas line/hose from carb and turn key on. If no gas there's your problem. You can have a weak spark, but not enough spark to start the bike. Someone just posted here that his coil tested good, but bike would not start? He changed coil, and it fixed the problem, it may have been a bad spark plug wire and not the coil? If you are getting gas and a spark, it should run? If side/kick stand switch was bad you would not get a spark. With 28,000K I do not think you would have a bad piston or rings? Have mechanic check compression. Easy to do while spark plug is out. If these things do not help, send a new post and tell us exacty what you have done already. We will go from there. Good luck. :'( :-*

Hi!

Your options are good, I've checked them already.
The side stand is OK
Kill switch and brake switch OK
Spark out OK (NGK CR8EIX, NGK CR8E), I dont know, how to check it when its in
AC OK, it pumps (as you said click click) gas (maybe too much  ;D)
I hope the compression is good, when the sp plug is out it pumped the mixture very fast and hard next to my finger, but mechanic should check it
At the end, the electricity. This is the worst, it can be a small problem, but to find it can be a nightmare. The COIL?? Good idea, gonna tell mech, but change it will be hard in my country. Which Kymco has the same coil?

The diaphragm in the top of the carburetor can get cracks or tears and then it won't lift up to allow air to flow. This would cause the engine to suck in all fuel, which won't ignite without the air.

Is the plug all wet with fuel?

I would think you could hook up another coil that puts out the same power to test if that works or not. If you are getting gas and spark it should start. The electronic ignition modual could be bad and telling the coil to fire at the wrong time to? Good luck. :-*

You can also circumvent the sidestand kill switch by finding the vacant connector that is down there by it, and connecting it to the wire leading to the kill switch.

Diaphragm is good, moves easily, checked
I'VE a leonardo250 coil, looks the same as kymco.

The wrong time ignition could be possible, mech must check it i think.

If mine has sat without running for more than a month it will be VERY hard to start.  It behaves as though there is no spark or gas.  I use the starter for 10 seconds at a time -- many times required before it tries to start.  Once it does start it is fine from then on.

If your 500 has sat a while it may be experiencing the same thing.  Try over and over to run the starter -- no more than 10 seconds at a time with 30 seconds between trys so the starter doesn't overheat and melt wires.

There may be nothing wrong with it at all except for this "normal" behaviour.

You may need to put the battery on a charger to accomplish the task.

Hi!

Your problem is not the same.

From the beginning :-) I bought the scooter 5 month ago. After changed oil-brake fluid-filters, once it did not start. Everithing looked fine, but wont start. With my "original" mech we checked everithing, there was no spark. ??? We changed the coil, nothing. The solution was the magnet sensor in the BAS. After he solded the wrong part, it worked fine :-) Happy!!!

But.
After the repair once in the morning it did not start, again. Spark was OK, but the same as now. Next morning it started, nothing wrong. Ahhh. OK, at last we were on tour, but when we stopped for 10 minutes, the bike did not start. And here am I now, strange situation, for me :-)

I thought it was the BAS you said you fixed the first time? I do know that if the coil is going bad, when it gets hot the field coil can break down. When it cools down it works fine until it gets hot again. :-*

The BAS works fine, it gives the spark (when its wrong or stucked there is no spark). The coil is good too (i think), warm and hot engine doesnt matter, spark OK

The trouble must be deeper, or something stupid electricity (ignition timing for example). But the mech works so slowly...

OK, the mech said, that the shaft comp reduction is faulty. Pffff. It works like a clutch. Now i need a new one, great.
