Magnetic Drain Plug?
« on: January 20, 2011, 02:29:05 AM »
Anyone know where to get a magnetic drain plug for the Super 8 ?  With no oil filter I would feel better having a Magnetic drain plup to catch metal particles.

Another alternative I've been thinking of ... put a high strength magnet in the bottom of the strainer plug. I think this would work ... either in place of the part Enviromoto is offering (which I really like) or along with the magnetic plug.

The small oil capacity of scooters is a little frightening but with regular changes and especially using synthetic oil, these engines should last a long time. A little help from a few strategically placed magnets can't hurt.

Has anyone tried putting one under the strainer?

The enviromoto kit, which looks like it has mag plugs for the eng oil bolt, filter screen bolt and final driver bolt, is only $9.99 delivered.  Why mess around with magnets?

I have been using Honda 10w40.  I used it because it's what the dealer recomended but will probably switch to something else on my next oil change.  I changed the oil at 165 and 500 miles.  I'll change it again around 1300.  I haven't decided yet on what kind of oil I'll use.  I'm considering Rotella 15w40 since it's what I use in my motorcycles.  The other options are Rotella 5w50 synthetic or maybe Mobil 1 synthetic.

Just changed my oil for the third time at 1268 miles.  I put in Rotella 5W40 Synthetic and replaced the drain plug and the big plug holding the oil screen with magnetic ones.  I'll report back after I ride some and see if I notice any difference.  I would expect it to start easier and maybe some increase in gas mileage.

I got the Drain Plug Kit from Enviromoto and was delighted to realize it had magnet inserts in EACH of the three  plugs. Delightful surprise. I took the kit to an automotive house, picked up some appropriate seals/ washers, and cleaned off some minor plating flash before I installed them. The screen plug was a bit difficult to fit as the magnet is a ring which pushes the screen up a bit higher than the original drain plug. Take your time when you are fitting this one as it could cross thread.

Great little addition to the bike - I think all the plugs will work on my P250 too. Which is a good thing at the high mileage on that 2 wheeled pick up truck.

glopezz, How'd those sliders work out for you, and what size did you get?

Also, anyone here used an external oil cooler? I live in Phoenix and ride everyday...

Cheers!

sorry its taking so long to reply... I was glopezz in another forum life (HA!)

I crashed the scoot shortly after that post and didn't have the parts installed.  In fact I have only recently started riding it again and the parts are still sitting...

I'll let you know if I ever get it on there.

Hard drive magnets work great for this they are about as strong as you get.  And are cheap or free.

Hey Bucky,

Sorry to hear about your crash. You and your scoot ok?

I suppose that's the reason for the name change? ;)

dvldoc, that's a great idea! I have tons of dead drives...
