old jacket armor failing, update
« on: December 11, 2025, 03:43:16 PM »
I'd posted a while back about the armor in my Winter jacket starting to crack or break when squeezed. I hadn't touched the jacket until this morning when I decided to pull out the old armor for a better look. The jacket is an AGV Sport textile Winter jacket I purchased about 9 or 10 years ago. It's my cold weather jacket and gets used from 3-5 times each Winter. Haven't used it this year.

Attached is pic of CE rated 'armor' that came with the jacket. Surprisingly I have never pulled the armor out for a look...probably because it was purchased at the beginning of my riding journey and it is worn so infrequently.

The black foam is fine, still pliable. The yellow? It crumbles to dust when squeezed. Made a mess of my couch and laptop keyboard!

I have extra armor for the jacket should I need it (still hoping to squeeze in a December ride)...until I can get a new order placed for some D30 shoulder and elbow armor.  The back protector was purchased separately and is still good...although it is also 9 or 10 years old. Probably wouldn't hurt to upgrade all of it.

pic of crumbling shoulder armor, elbow armor (which also cracks when bent) and jacket.

check your armor, it doesn't last forever!

I've had the orange Klim D30 armor pads in my jackets for over 10 years. I bought two sets over the years = because I'll switch out jackets in the morning depending on the weather.
They remain soft and flexible. My pieces are not as ventilated as are the new pads - but I've never been bothered by heat during my dawn rides :)

Interesting stuff - got my attention, so I bought them.
"Non-Newtonian Polymer: The core D3O material is a patented, rate-sensitive polymer that is soft and pliable at rest, but hardens on impact to absorb shock "

I have hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, back pads - and my ICON boots have some in the ankles.

The boots were the last safety clothing I purchased.
Sneakers will land further away than my body after an impact!
I bought ICONs with the BOA lacing system - now no excuses - much easier to deal with than laces.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.
