XCiting 300iR, outer gear bearing and oilseal renewal
« on: September 03, 2025, 01:00:16 PM »
Again, I'm inclined to say, not being too lucky with scooter gears.

My XC 300iR let hear a grinding noise from its gear, which had to be examinated.

Muffler, carrier, RH shock and wheel off.

Result, specks of rust and brownish sludge outside exit driveshaft on the bearings sidewall, not to mention a rough feeling/noise when turned by hand.

Well, gear oil out, showed that there were only ca. 150ml instead of 230ml in it, my fault. Refilled 200ml. (oil level, dark, to be seen on pic)

Bought two oilseals, one for the gear, the second one for the carrier, where I renewed wheelbearing and oilseal too.
Size oilseals: 34-52-7 normsize €8,- each
Gear bearing: 6205 LU
Carrier bearing: 6204 LU, all normsize.€11,- each

Used the wellknown heating/ freezing method to change bearings and oilseals within gear and wheelcarrier.
All in all a four hour job inclusive a trip to my industrial shop for material (no coffee break).

Two more pics in this matter..
..fortunately neither bearings seats nor driveshafts surface have been demaged, so it was an easy, quick and inexpensive repair.
..btw, this XC 300 has a rubber gasket to seal the gear bell, no need for a new one.
..also the CVT cover installs a rubber gasket which lasts.

great pics, Ruffus. Love your detail. I am wondering about the bearings that sit above the oil level...are they just splash lubricated by the gear oil? And you mentioned the bearing seats were all in good shape. If they had been gouged or otherwise damaged, how would you have repaired them? Or would you have just replaced the case they were in?

.@hawk,
yes the lower sprocket/s just splash oil all around the gearbox. This is why we have this tube to release pressure from gear into airbox.

-bearing seats:
if the demage is above 2/10 of a millimeter or all around (bearings outer casing did some rounds) on the motor (clutch) side, the whole motor is a write off. Used blocks are available.

IF the demage is just feelable I would use an anaerob filler and "glue" the bearing in.

If the seats are within "gear bell" (as in my case), too heavy (deep) demaged, I would

a) consider a used bell
b) go to my alu-welder and weld some material in
then but the bell in a lathe and machine towards size
c) put an oversize bearing into (lathe again)
Always depends on amount (depht) of demage, money and parts available. A whole motor to swap is about €400,- this to be taken in acount.
