Speedometer working intermittently
« on: August 02, 2019, 02:08:11 PM »
My speedo is having some issues, sometimes working, sometimes not. At first I though it was a problem with the display because it started right after resetting “trip” miles, and seemed to come back after pressing various buttons...mph/mph, etc. But today the issue is back again. Anyone else ever had this happen? I’d like to avoid a service trip if possible. Thanks!!

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

Hi Stig,

I bought it new July 2018...about 4K miles on it at this point. Great condition otherwise!

Updated info...

The speedo was "working" on my way back from work, but it seems to be registering everything x2. Completely wonky. Display will jump from 7mph to 28mph in an instant, and the trip meter shows 7 miles from work which is normally 3.5. I'm thinking this may be a display problem. I can't tell if the gas gauge is functioning properly yet...usually doesn't drop a bar until 20 miles in. I should know if that's ok tomorrow.

Bad connection? Hey, wait! Is it mechanical with aa old fashioned cable to the front wheel or is it electronic with a tone ring on the front wheel?

My old 50cc had the simple cable to front wheel. That was easy.  I’m not sure what this one is. A thin tube from a sensor on the front wheel it looks like. If the gas gauge works tomorrow, probably has something to do with that sensor/cable. There is a bit of exposed wiring (with insulation) coming out of the display into the front end. Some electrical tape is wrapped around it, but it’s become exposed over time. Not sure if this has any bearing on the problem though.

It appears electric. There is a wire/cable on the left side of front wheel that goes to a sensor that must be about .025" from it looks like the brake disc which has a bunch of holes around the outer edge. That thing is probably too far from the disc or misaligned in some way. This is all fron looking at pictures on the internet so be prepared....!
