New Scooter rider - new to the forum - first question
« on: March 23, 2014, 09:26:51 PM »
Hello there.

I am a motorcyclist (Honda VFR800) and now a new Kymco People 150 owner.  (Wife will be the rider.)

Been going over the manual and it surprised me to see 92 octane or better fuel is required.  Is this what everyone runs?

Also, not to start yet another dreaded oil thread, but what does everyone run in this scoot?

Thanks!

The Rotella gets a lot of votes.....but I use BP 93 octane gas. This scoot of mine sips gas...holds a tiny amount of oil.
My dealer's head mechanic said to use Amsoil scooter specific oil. So, I do.
The over-all chorus which I hear is to : "Use good oil and change it often!"
Of course, there is even a loud group who argue against that.
Be good to your scoot and it will be good etc......

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

If the scooter has no oil filter, like the GV250, I'd change oil every 1000 miles.  We use Shell Rotella T 15w40.
The 92 octane is probably the foreign value for what is regular gas in the USA (We use an average octane calculation).
Don't forget to change the rear gear oil.  That box gets pretty hot and probably decomposes the oil as fast as the engine, so we change it
every oil change... so far.

VFR800 must be fun. My DH had a VF700S (1985) but it was too  big for him.  Now, he likes his VTR250 (1989).

Scoot safely and welcome to the forum.

92-93 (RON) Octane in Asia is almost the same as the 87 (RON+MON/2) Octane in the U.S.

Oil = Rotella 15w-40...  Or any good brand scooter specific oil... changed every 1,000 miles...

That's all... ride safe..!

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

MaryK - The People 150 has an oil screen, so I'll be changing oil at 1k.  BTW, Yep, the VFR is major fun.  Wanted one in the '80s when I was a broke college kid.  Then marriage, mortgage, kids, etc.  Five years ago I finally got a used '03 for cheap.

Vivo - thanks.  I may go midgrade on the gas (89 octane) with some seafoam.

I'll be checking in from time to time.  Seems the scoots need a bit more TLC than the bigger bikes do.

Take care everyone!

Congrats and welcome to the forum. My first scooter was a People 150 and it was a great scoot. I needed a little more top end for a interstate commute, so I bought a GTI300. When I had my 150, I ran regular 87 octane with no problem. I'm also a fan of full synthetic oil. I ran a 10-40 full synthetic in the motor and a 75-90 full synthetic in the differential. I changed both every 1000 miles. Quick, easy and inexpensive. My 150 also responded very well to lighter rollers in the variator if you want a little more zip. Good luck and ride safe!

Thanks, MrMike,

I'm a fan of full syn too.  The VFR gets Rotella T-6 5W-40 every 3,000.  The cars get Mobil 1 every 5k.

We'll see how things go before we look into variator weight changes.  There's a whole lot I gotta learn.

Been using the Rotella 15W-40, 87 octane (w/o ethanol) gas, and 1 oz Seafoam/gallon of gas of  about every 4th or 5th fill-up for several years now in my People 150 and it runs like a top! ;)
