Won't start
« on: September 14, 2013, 06:23:33 PM »
Hello everyone, new here and have a quick question. I live in Boulder and as you might have heard, we had a little bit of rain the past few days. Now that it's done, the scoot ('12 Like 50) won't start. It was covered, but I threw the cover on in a hurry as it started to rain while I was at work. I looked around and it looks like a clear plastic tube should be attached to something and isn't and I'm wondering if that is the reason it isn't starting. I'm attaching some pics. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The clear tube looks about the right length to be the carb bowl drain tube. It generally is routed from the carb bottom drain fitting and hangs down to point at the ground. There may be a retainer loop it is pulled out of.

On the no start condition did you have any trouble before? Does it just crank and no attempt to run?

The right side of the clear tube is still attached, but the left side isn't. Sounds like that might not be the problem though.

I've never had any problems starting it before. Even though it's a 2012, I bought it a few weeks ago with 16 miles on it and it's only around 50 now. I've tried the electric start and the kick start and it won't go. Is it possible water got in somewhere? I had a cover over it for most of the rain, though I couldn't get it covered until after it started coming down.

Did you check the kill switch by the hand grip? May have gotten flipped in the process of covering it up. Aside from a simple issue like that or an empty fuel tank you will need to do a little troubleshooting.

Verify there is spark. This can be done easily with an extra spark plug, or by removing the plug and sticking it in the plug boot, and touching the spark plug nut/threads to a bolt in the frame while you crank it over and you will see the spark jump the electrode gap. (if the plug wont stay touching the bolt, hold the thick part of the rubber boot)

The air filter shouldn't have got wet, but if you have spark I would pull the cover and make sure there isn't water sitting behind the filter.

You can verify there is fuel in the carb by turning the slotted screw on the bottom of the fuel bowl one turn counter clockwise while watching the clear tube by the carb to see if fuel begins to enter it. Once you see fuel in the tube close the screw back, but not too tight.

Hope you find the kill switch flipped, but if not you'll find the problem checking spark, air and fuel.

It was the kill switch and I'm officially an idiot for not checking that first. Geeze. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Yep, after coming home in a BIG rain on my LIKE 200i I towelled it off. Next morning no start!
No start, no start, etc., etc.
Went back in the house to the DELL to look up causes.....while the PC was booting up I got to thinking.
Forum member Vivo assured me months ago that rain would not bother this Kymco.....maybe I accidentally flipped the kill switch when drying off the scoot?
That was it! Scoot fired right up when I turned the kill switch back on.
Makes you feel pretty dumb~!!
