General Discussion / Re: How many owners are using non-ethanol fuel?
« Last post by randyo on June 04, 2026, 04:15:39 PM »
only in my 2 strokes, I use VP 50:1 premix in my chainsaws.  VP guarantees fresh fuel for 5 years in unopened container, 2 years after opening. According to the MSDS the fuel is primarily naphtha with their proprietary 2 stroke oil. Prior to my using VP, I was using pump gas with ethanol, and I'd end up throwing most away after it went stale, so I don't mind paying $17/gal

The irony of an Iowan using ethanol free gas.
If I were in charge, all gas would be ethanol free.

General Discussion / How many owners are using non-ethanol fuel?
« Last post by Stig / Major Tom on June 04, 2026, 01:53:38 PM »
Curious here - as I see that member Hawk uses non-ethanol fuel.
Ethanol free gas is pretty HTF in my county.
A half doz locations were listed on line - and 4 phone calls to the stations came back, rather incredulously, ""no!"

My local mega-brand dealer sells everything from Ducatis to Kymcos - 4 wheelers and those giant 3-wheelers - and according to their service desk, every new vehicle rolls out of there with various grades of 10% fuel-mix from the SHELL station just down the street.

Once., while I was waiting for a tire to be mounted - I discussed with the service supe those who so often go first to ,"BAD GAS!" when DIYing their engine problems. He shrugged, smiled knowingly, and said, "nope - not in N America".

I get that many prefer ethanol free for their vintage rides.
I, for one, don't miss carbs for many reasons - although, there remains of group who feel that EFI has ruined their owner experience....and that of their clan.

Anyway - I do wonder how many are using ethanol-free gasoline - and if so, "why". and how far do you have to go to get it?
Also - what quality of fuel might it be - or is that not a concern?

General Discussion / Re: SR (scooter related) because... Croatia

Croatia claims to have 1000 islands, about half of them are connected by ferries. Its great, doing island hopping, particular on bikes, no need for reservation on ferries.

If there was no chain jump why should valves be the culprit?

Kill switch has a green and a white cable...
- take a needle and short this two cables
- Yes, drive the needle through both wires without touching ground
- this two cables towards coil, have secure fit and aren't broken?
- side stand switch engaged?
- tilt sensor/ relay engaged/faulty?
- ground cable from battery minus to engine rotten?
- take a different spark plug (new is no guarantee)

AND AGAIN, is there fuel coming?
Is there a spark?
A systematic search is essentiell.
What does it now?

rather than saying it 'flipped' it would be more accurate to say I didn't install it correctly or I didn't squeeze the variator together enough while installing. That allowed it to slip out of the correct place. It made enough noise to definitely let me know, though!

Starting the Helix after a long break, with a drained carb bowl, takes about 50 revolutions of the engine? Must be slow to fill the carb bowl back up (electric fuel pump on the helix from the under floor mounted fuel tank).

When run regularly it fires right up. It only sees non ethanol gas with fuel stabilizer and I'll drain the carb bowl if I know it will sit more than a couple weeks.
And.......it's an old Honda!  8)

New ignition coil finally arrived, installed it, no change🙁.

Put in new iridium spark plug, no change. 😠

Maybe it’s the valves?  Top valve was closed, all right that must be the problem. Adjusted it, no change😫.

Trying to start scooter it sounds and acts exactly like the kill switch is on. Tried taking apart what the kill switch is attached to (on the handlebar), one of the two screws turns but won’t come out😡.

Could a faulty kill switch be the problem?  Still puzzled by what is setting off the two engine codes, and whether that is what is causing the on start.  Again, scoot ran fine up until it wouldn’t start🤔

I’m exasperated at this point.
