People 50 / Re: Strange drop in power and speed

Check if your carb is getting gas, open the carb drain and let the gas flow out, then check that it refills OK, might try that.

How do you test this with the vacuum operated auto cock / fuel filter. Gas doesn't flow unless the motor is running?  I guess I could turn the motor over without the ignition on and see if it refills.  I'm asking because I'm having an issue where I'm only getting about half power from WOT position and think I may have a plugged fuel line.

From http://motorscooterguide.net/Kymco/People/People.html

Engines
The smaller People 50 scooter utilized the same 2-stroke engine found in all of Kymco’s 50cc 2-stroke models. This motor is a CLONE of Honda’s nicely designed AF18E/AF16E motor found in North American scooters like the ’94-’01 Honda Elite SR. This motor is hugely popular worldwide and has quite a following of aftermarket parts. You can read all the in-depth information this motor including information on derestricting it on the Kymco Super 9 page.

Having seen this, I've also seen that you need be very careful when parts hunting because the Kymco is enough different from the Honda that some parts aren't interchangeable.

People 50 / 2007 People 2T with 600 miles
« on: July 10, 2015, 06:09:01 PM »
I bought a 2007 People a few weeks ago with just 1000km on it.  When I went to test ride it the battery was dead from sitting over the winter. The seller put a new battery on it and it started right up and ran fine for a short test ride. I bought it.

I drove it about 10 miles home and it ran fan running up to 50 mph on the speedo going down small hills and overall seemed fine.

The next morning it started right up but when I gave it throttle, it died.  Did this several times and I put it away and took my car.  I read through a bunch of posts and found that if I put my hand over the snorkel/air intake I could get it to run and drive.  It does die sometimes when it's cold and I have to do the same thing all over.

I also added a couple ounces of Seafoam to the gas in case the gas had been sitting in it all winter and things got gunked up.

I tried the 1/4 turn of the air screw and that made things worse. Put it back to where it was.  I've kept riding it and have put a couple hundred miles on it.

Still has the cold start problem and now once it warms up it only seems to be running at about half power under full throttle. It just pulls slowly up to speed but doesn't go over about 30 mph. Definitely not running at full power.  When it's cold, it does give full power.

I checked the spark plug wires. They look like new - the scooter is basically an almost new 8 year old bike. It was stored inside and all the rubber parts look great.

I'm guessing that because it sat a lot and was hardly used that the carb or fuel filters are gummed up.  I did put the Seafoam in about half a tank ago.  Don't know whether to keep riding it and hope the Seafoam eventually works or start taking things apart and cleaning them.

Thought I'd start with the fuel filter first and then move to the carb if that doesn't work.  I can't seem to find a definitive answer on here if there is a fuel screen in the tank before the main fuel filter/auto cock. Does anyone know for sure if there is and if so how to clean or replace it?

Any other ideas?

Sometimes I don't know whether to add to an existing thread or start a new one.  I'll add for now.

Thanks everyone. Filter and plug are clean. This is a problem that just won't go away. Suspect the choke isn't working properly. This is the third choke I have had on this thing. Installed a manual and it worked great until it fell apart. Back to the automatic and it has never started easily cold since installation.

What manual choke did you use?

Where did you buy the replacement choke/auto bystarter?

Just wanted to come in and say the unrestricted cdi part number TYC-D421 works on the People 50 2t as well. It came on mine. On a 2007 People, the cdi is located behind the front cover.
