People 50 / Arrow pipe?
« on: December 19, 2014, 03:47:43 PM »
I did search and didn't find anyone using Arrow pipe.  It's a clamshell, which makes it cheaper to manufacture, but I like it's looks and price.  I have some experience with clamshell pipes.  I raced a Rotax FR125 kart engine for several years and it uses a very large clamshell pipe.  It worked very well and was tough.

Ebay listing says good on '07 to '13 People 50, but I think all years People 50 are the same?

People 50 / remove buddy seat?
« on: December 18, 2014, 04:09:13 PM »
I have 2005 People 50 with buddy seat option.  I think scooter looks cooler without the buddy seat, so I want to remove it.  I have looked but don't see the fitting that remounts the carrier rack without the buddy seat.  Anyone know where I can get that part, or some other good way to mount it.  It looks like all I really need is 3 spacers, but would just as well get the OEM part if I can find it.  Cheers

People 50 / air hose coming from engine cover going no where?
« on: December 12, 2014, 07:15:11 PM »
I recently bought 2005 People 50 2T.  Nice scooter, I like it, but doesn't run.  Just like my Super 9, no spark without battery.  I think it just needs a battery, so I am going to be patient and wait for the battery before I start tearing it apart.

I took the storage bucket out and noticed 2 things.  1st the fuel tank auto petcock was bypassed, and 2nd there is a mystery hose coming from the engine cover on the left side of the engine.  It goes back along the left side and ends near the carb.  It sure looks like it's supposed to be connected to something, but I don't see anywhere to connect it.  It's approx 1" OD and fits the engine cover like it is supposed to be there.  I am thinking something was taken out.  The airbox seems to be complete, don't think it connects to airbox.  Hot air from the engine would definitely be coming out the end, but what for?

Anyone know what this hose is for?

Super 9 / have stock carb, what jets to order?
« on: November 15, 2014, 11:35:06 PM »
Got 2003 S9 LC to run and drove around the neighborhood some.  Runs OK, but appears lean, very slow to warm up, boggs at lower rpms.  When it comes up on the pipe it takes off, but I hesitate to push it until I get a chance to test it out more.  Air temp was in the 40's fahrenheit all day, so fairly cold.

Service manual says carb has #92/ #78 main jet (unlimited/ limited speed) and #35 slow jet.  When I took carb apart to clean, jets didn't have any markings that I could recognize, so I don't know what I have.  Also, the CDI green wire is connected, so I think it's still restricted.  Scooter has nice expansion chamber, I think came stock with it.  I think CVT has been opened, but didn't seem to slip that much, but really don't know if modified.  I plan to keep stock airbox, because of nose concerns.  I know from kart racing, the loudest engine sounds come from the carb, not the exhaust.

I did some research, I think I have Keihin PB16 carb and found I can order some jets from jetsrus, thanks to some postings on this site.  Any recommendations on jets to order, main and slow?  Assuming I have #78 main jet and #35 slow jet.  Thanks

Super 9 / tach doesn't work
« on: November 13, 2014, 05:30:25 PM »
My tach needle is pegged to the right.  I took the plastic cover off and moved it back to zero.  It actually worked for a little while, but it's back to being maxed out again.  Is there something to check for that might be causing this or do I just need to replace it?  Thanks for any replies.  Cheers

Super 9 / easy way to drain fuel tank?
« on: November 12, 2014, 04:50:16 PM »
I want to drain fuel tank, and add some new gas.  The vacuum petcock makes it difficult to drain tank.  Anyone know an easy way to drain the fuel tank?  Thanks

Super 9 / 2003 Super 9 LC no spark
« on: November 06, 2014, 07:39:32 PM »
I took off all the plastic and have been checking down the list in the service manual.  I am not good with multimeter, so having some issues there.  Anyway, I am learning some new stuff, which is fun.

So far this is what I have checked:  (1) sparkplug OK, installed new one, still no spark (2) checked CDI unit, multimeter doesn't do anything with CDI, don't know if CDI bad or multimeter bad (3) checked coil and plug wire, coil appears maybe OK, but didn't get any continuity from coil to plug cap or end of plug wire, maybe OK and multimeter just bonkers (4) checked AC generator and got bad readings, again not sure if bad multimeter or not, (5) checked ignition switch and appears OK, (6) checked fuses, appear OK, I think fuses are in the little cylinders, right?, the ones on the box are just spares, right?

Someone  posted that when starting with kick starter, don't need to hold brakes.  Actually, have to put scooter on center stand to use kick starter, i.e. center stand is in the way if up.  So, I didn't check brakes, but I was using rear brakes when kick starting anyway and no spark.  There appears to be a switch that is actuated when the center stand is up, I guess has something to do with starting, IDK.

I am debating what to do next.  Go buy another multimeter?  Pull the stator?  Start checking wiring continuity all over the scooter?  If I just start replacing parts, the stator would probably be a part to replace, plus CDI, and coil.  If the pulser is bad, appears have to buy the whole stator right?

I am thinking even if I buy some parts I don't need, plus some tools, still maybe about the same as taking it to the shop.  I did call the shop and sounds expensive, plus a huge hassle to get scooter there and back.  So for now, I think I will continue to try to fix it myself.

Also, I did a search and found a guy with Agility 125 that had the same problem and I was basically going down the same path behind him.  He gave it his best, but eventually gave-up and took it to the shop.  Was great for me to read post, was huge encouragement for me, because in the end he figured out he could have fixed it himself if he had just gone a little farther.

Cheers

Super 9 / fuel tank
« on: November 05, 2014, 02:18:41 AM »
I got carb all cleaned up nice, put it back together, and was thinking it would start.  I don't have battery yet, so I was using the kick starter.  I know to apply the rear brakes, had ignition switch on, kill switch on, scooter on the center stand, and started kicking, nothing.  I checked the carb drain for fuel and no fuel.  Fuel tank has gas, but won't flow out to carb.

I looked around a little and know there is some sort of fuel tank vacuum value that closes the fuel tank if engine is not running.

So my question is, with the carb dry, will the kick starter pull enough vacuum to open the fuel tank?  Maybe I will try filling the carb bowl with gas and try to kick start it.  If it starts and runs just a little, then should have enough vacuum to open the fuel tank, if that's the issue.

I guess need to drain the tank anyway and make sure it's clean, but was really wanting to hear it run just a little.

Super 9 / LC water cooled carb
« on: November 01, 2014, 03:38:24 PM »
I took my carb out to clean, was really gummed up, still working on it to free up the idle and main jets.  I was amazed to find coolant being piped through the carb.  Overkill, but interesting.  I bet some just splice the carb coolant hoses together rather than connect back to carb.  A fair amount of trouble to disconnect/ reconnect 2 more hoses to the carb.  I will probably put it back the way it was.  Ciao

Super 9 / battery 2003 different from 2009?
« on: October 31, 2014, 03:08:39 AM »
I am looking for new battery.  Several sites have batteries for 2009, but not compatible with 2003.  What's up with that?  Is there something special about 2003 LC battery or do all Super 9's take the same battery?

Super 9 / coolant low, engine damaged?
« on: October 30, 2014, 11:20:19 AM »
I figured out I have LC engine, which is cool I guess.  Actually, I would have been happy with AC engine.  Based upon my experience with another LC engine, sometimes simple is better IOM.  Gauge on back of front panel doesn't show any coolant level.  So, I started taking off plastic and found the reservoir.  Not totally empty, has some green liquid in bottom.

Seller says hasn't run in years.  Last license plate is for 2005.  I guess could have leaked out a little over years and was never run without enough coolant.  How low can coolant go without overheating engine?

Super 9 / handle bars loose
« on: October 28, 2014, 04:30:24 PM »
I have 03 Super 9, just bought, not running.  Looks good condition, was told just needs battery and carb cleaned, and should run.  I also noticed handle bars has a little play, I am hoping just needs to be tightened.  Anybody ever have this issue?

Pretty cool forum.  I read a lot of the posts last night, tons of good info, thanks.

I am just planning to ride in the neighborhood.  I have racing karts and minibikes.  Pretty dicey riding minibikes here, can get a handful of tickets, bike impounded, so decided to go legal and get a scooter.  Cheers
