If it's a mechanical clock with gears, there's probably someone on top of maintaining it.

Arkansas and Missouri, some of the least expensive places to live (and in the case of rural Arkansas and Missouri, poorest), just voted in a minimum wage increase to $11 and $12 respectively.

Easily a living wage for a family -- monumental.

I didn't get your PM, but I did send one a few days ago when I finally noticed your post. Let me know if you didn't get it -- could be that the messaging system is not working.

Sounds like the clutch or belt are slipping.

... that's a good catch, paying attention to the distance traveled.

If you look at the shape of the gas tank, you'll see it's pretty irregular:

Most likely there's no way for that float on the sender to actually reach the very top.

So first the fuel level needs to go down to a point where the sender will even start to register that fuel was used.
Then, the tank is wider at the top than at the base. So unless the sender goes through some kind of processing (not sure), you'll see an acceleration in how quickly the bars fall relative to the actual amount of fuel used.

There was a discussion about how much spare power there is on the Downtown 300i recently. It was determined that there's not much. Chances are that the older 250's are similar.

If the rechargable liners don't last long enough, maybe you could haul a deep cycle battery under the seat?

The original 80-85 mph doesn't sound right either. That's typical of a 250.

Is that the airbox tube?

I think it's likely that the other 250's share the same carburetor.

Comparing these two diagrams, they certainly look very similar:

My People 250 had an analog gauge, and would stay in the middle of it nearly all the time once it was hot. I think maybe it would sometimes get a bit hotter in stop and go traffic, but the changes weren't sudden.

The temperature gauge reads the coolant temperature coming out of the thermostat housing, which might be hotter than the radiator, and cooler than the engine block.

My guess would be somewhere in the middle is normal operating temperature, 5 bars would be concerning, and 6 bars would be critical.

Actually, GLV55, I just reread you story. His license was already suspended, so requiring regular testing wouldn't have even helped anything.

We already prohibit driving for medical reasons. If the list of restrictions and medical problems needs to be expanded, that's one thing. But there's no need to bring age into it.

The radiator is completely filled to the neck? And you're sure there isn't air in the system? It doesn't look sludgy/brown?

If the fan is coming on, that would suggest that it's circulating to the radiator, since that's where the temperature switch is. The radiator should also be hot. You could also visually see the coolant flow into the neck, although careful doing this as it rises/spills over pretty fast.

You can probably figure out the manufacturing year with the VIN.

The value is is going to be extremely low without the paperwork.

you sir, are a danger on the road, hypothermia is worse than drunk driving, your reactions are slowed just as much without the euphoria to know that your reactions have slowed

If you have even one iota of a shiver, you are hypothermic

No way is it near that level of impairment. Not saying that there isn't SOME danger in being mildly hypothermic. Hands in particular can slow down problematically, separately from hypothermia.
