Well, since I traded in my 2009 Xciting 250 for a 2013 Majesty on June 4, I've put a little over 2000 MILES ON IT! I chsnged the oil at 600 miles as recommended and it's broken in. So here are some observations.

Those extra 150 cc's make a HUGE DIFFERENCE!
Top GPS verified  speed . Xciting 78.     Majesty 93.
Speed at redline: Xciting 65-68. Majesty can't reach redline
Maximum Comfortable GPS verified cruising speed (based on the feel of the scooter) Xciting 63mph
Majesty 80 ish.

The Majesty offers better windscreen protection due to its height. It seems to be  easier to balance at VERY LOW speeds. Has a MUCH  LARGER under seat storage area. Has much longer maintenance intervals. MORE vibration at idle, LESS vibration at cruising speeds. (Both likely due to the larger engine. Also, the lights are significantly better although the Xciting's lighting was more than adequate.
It has a light to tell me when it's time to chsnge the belt, TWO trip odometers and a thermometer. Also, the rear springs can be adjusted without using any tools. Just twist it with the hand.
AND it has A PARKING BRAKE!

That being said, the Xciting 250 was a great scooter. The only 'problem" was that it was not capable of maintaining interstate speeds . Nor was it designed to do so.
The Kymco had a power outlet for charging the cell phone. A cell phone holder, an oil pressure light, flash to pass, emergency flashers, and a low battery light. The Majesty has none of those.
Also, the Majesty SEEMS to have just a tad les legroom. And it seems to be affected by buffeting a little more when behind a large vehicle. Also, the Kymco has loud turn signals. The Majesty's are SILENT. THE Xciting is easier to refuel because the filler neck is up high. The Majesty's is under the hump.

Fuel economy when driven at 60-65 mph: Xciting 64-65 mpg. Majesty 54-56 mpg.

All in all I LOVE the Majesty. But it's primary advantage is the more powerful engine.

General Discussion / They must have bumped their head!

I'm nearing the time for the initial 600 mile oil change. So I called the local Yamaha dealer because I was considering having at least the first service done at the dealer. It consists of changing the oil and filter and the rear end fluid.  I asked him how much. And he said $150-200 depending on whether I want it looked over too. . SERIOUSLY? 150-200 bucks for 1.8 quarts of 10w 40 , an oil filter, and 8 oz of 10w 30 for the ear end? That's much more than we charge at the Ford Dealership where I work ! And the cars require 5 to 7 qts.

Guess who'll be doing their own.

General Discussion / You guys rock!

I visited the Yamaha  forum as well as a few other  dedicated scooter forums . And there's no comparison. Kymco owners actually COMMUNICATE with each other. Many of the other forums are dead. And the ones that are not still lack the "comradary" I found here. I might make an offer on the Bet and Win that a guy left at my job for over a year just to have an excuse to keep in touch. Lol. This is what I think of you guys 👍🏾👏🏽

By the way Stig, pictures of the Majesty  are on the way. 😄

General Discussion / Leaving KYMCO 😢
« on: June 05, 2016, 12:47:14 PM »
Yesterday I saw an advertisement in cycle trader for a new unsold 2013 Yamaha Majesty. I decided to take a 140 mile "wind therapy" ride to rebuild confidence in my 2009 Xciting 250 and perhaps stop by just to see The Majesty. Well, it was reduced to 2999.00. I figured that my credit was not good enough. But they insisted that I fill out an application just to see. Well it wasn't as bad I thought. And with my old Kymco as a trade, I could ride away with no money down and payments I could afford. THEY WERE GOOD! 😂. And several hours later, I rode away on a 2013 Majesty with .1 miles on the odometer. And a factory warranty.  The challenge was to ride the 140 miles at break in speeds. I did cheat (for a short while)  just to see the highway capability. And while the speedometer accuracy in not as good as my Xciting, I was able to EASILY hit a true 75 with the engine nowhere near redline.

I'll do an oil change at the required 500 miles. Take it easy for 1200 miles, then let her rip.

YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN GREAT! I'll pop in from time to time just to keep in touch.

General Discussion / Losing confidence.
« on: May 20, 2016, 05:39:05 AM »
As some of you have already read, my scooter put me down tonight AGAIN 20 miles from home. Roadside assistance brought it home. But my confidence is shattered. I was planning on taking a 120-150 mile road trip later this summer. But now, I don't know. What else can go wrong and leave me stranded away from home?

Just frustrated. Hope it's just a run of bad luck. I had zero Problems this winter. Even though I drove anytime morning temps were above 45deg. F. Now that I have COMFORTABLE riding weather, the darn thing wants to keep breaking down!

Will check thoroughly to make certain. But I suspect it's the stator.

Feeling down and frustrated. 12000 miles, and the stator may be bad.

Xciting 250 / Battery went dead
« on: May 20, 2016, 05:29:30 AM »
Well... Breakdowns are becoming too regular. Because of rain, I did not ride by scooter to work today. But I Went on a 40 mile ride after work. Anyway, on my way home about 20 miles from home, I turned I to get gas. Looked down and the battery light had just come on. VERY shortly afterward, it stalled. Jumped it off, and it would run as long as I  had the rpm's up high. But once it dropped anywhere near idle, the lights would dim and it would stall.

I suspect a bad stator. Just purchased battery on Monday . I will double check everything just to make sure.
If it's the Stator, I'm debating whether to try to tackle it myself vs pay the mechanic money I don't have. According to the manual, it seems straightforward.

How common are stator failures at 12000 miles? And is this something you all recommend that I tackle myself. If it were an automobile, I wouldn't hesitate. But it isn't.

General Discussion / Crazy thought
« on: May 18, 2016, 05:06:18 PM »
I noticed

1. that the Downtown belt is much more robust than the Xciting 250 ri.
2. I've also noticed that the crusing speed is much higher.

3. The belt is only slightly wider on the Downtown.

4. While the Xciting 250 is less powerful, it does have the POTENTIAL to cruise at 70 at less than 7500 rpm. (It did so when I had the ill fated Bando belt on it.)

Crazy thoughts. 1. I wonder if the distance between the variator and the rear pulley is the same.
2. If so, are the splines and shaft size on both scooters the same.
3. If so, could a person play with the belt/pulley/roller/contra spring combination and come up with a way to make the more robust belt of the Downtown 300 fit on the Xciting 250 ri.

I wish there was some way to VERY CHEAPLY obtain the parts from a Downtown just to experiment. Like I said, it IS a crazy thought. But.....[emoji849]

Xciting 250 / Shredded another belt. 2500 miles.
« on: May 13, 2016, 12:38:05 PM »
I recently replaced my belt. HOPEFULLY it's just a "cheap belt" . I installed a Bando brand belt because I could get it more quickly than the Kymco. I now have the real Kymco belt. But I thought I would just wait until later to install it because I THOUGHT that Bando was a decent belt since that's what they use on the smaller scooters.

Anyway, other than the low belt quality, is there any other thing that can DESTROY a belt prematurely? I ride hard fifty miles each way to work. And I know that's hard on a belt. But 2500 miles? My pulley faces look good and smooth. I Just inspected the belt last Saturday. It looked good then. HOPEFULLY it's just a low quality belt. If so, it will be KYMCO and ONLY Kymco belts from now on.

Glad I have the spare belt this time.

Xciting 250 / Loses power at or near WOT
« on: May 08, 2016, 12:13:55 AM »
A new problem has occurred with my 2009 250 Xciting Ri. Under full acceleration at wot, or when accelerating as if to pass, the engine accelerates normally, then loses power. If I back off for a while and then accelerate normally, it's fine until at or near WOT again. If I hold the throttle, it will gradually lose power  and slow down until it stalls. But if I back off at any time for a few seconds, it will continue to run.

It did it on Tuesday for a while, then it drove normally on Thursday and Friday to and from work (50 miles each way) It drove normally this morning. But now it's doing it again. It acts like its starving for fuel. I don't see an external fuel filter. Nor does the repair manual or owners manual specify a fuel filter interval. The mechanic says that the filter's on the pump. And I removed the fuel pump and checked it. Both  the in tank  filter and tank are clean.

I already changed the spark plug on Monday because it misfired badly on Monday under all conditions . That problem's fixed.
The pump SEEMS to be pumping great volume and pressure since it overcame the pressure of my thumb over the pump outlet.

What other things besides a weak pump could cause this issue?
Bad injector? Other causes?
If I can't fix it by Monday, I'm taking it to the dealer on Tuesday.. But I'd rather save that money. HELP!!

General Discussion / Zombie
« on: May 04, 2016, 02:25:06 AM »
Since I joined this forum in January, I've read a lot of the old posts. And there was this guy named Zombie that commented on A LOT of them . He kept it interesting. Then all of a sudden around Last July he seemed to have disappeared. Anyone know what happened to him?
Also, it seems as if he only lived about an hour from me.

Monday morning as I started my 50 commute to work, my Xciting 250 stumbled as I pulled out of my driveway. Instead of turning around and driving my car, I shrugged it off because I had taken off like a bat from the underworld two seconds after starting it up. I drove 65+ because I was running late.
Well, I got within two miles of work , and it momentarily stumbled again. I got busy at work and promptly FORGOT what happened. After waiting out an afternoon pop up rain shower, I left work, got to the by-pass and TRIED to gun it to merge with traffic. It just puttered. So I just hobbled to the nearest parts house. Had to buy a spark plug AND the tools to install it. The old plug Was BEYOND worn.

Thankful that 1. I made it to work
2. It messed up BEFORE I hit that 30 mile stretch between no where and no where else!
3. The parts house had the correct spark plug IN STOCK!
4. The spark plug fixed it.

Was I
A. A baby
B. A fool
C. Both

I'm my parents YOUNGEST child. I'm an auto mechanic and SHOULD know better . So I guess the answer is C. [emoji1474]

General Discussion / Best summer gear.
« on: April 30, 2016, 03:53:14 PM »
I'm a new rider, so I was wondering what do you guys wear for summer riding? In Tallahassee, Florida it's ALREADY near 90 degrees and the humidity is climbing. I CONSISTENTLY wear a mesh Jacket with armour. It's a lower priced jacket, and although it's acceptable when riding at highway speeds, it's still very hot siting still and going slow. Are some brands more comfortable than others?
I also wear mesh OVERPANTS with armour because I can wear shorts or light pants underneath and only have to buy one pair. I can also remove them without fanfare when I get where I'm going. But I admit that I'm less consistent with them. Are the mesh jackets and overpants simply the most comfortable fairly safe things around? Are certain brands cooler than others.
I can tolerate it now. But I'm wondering about when temperatures reach near three digits and humidity climbs to sauna levels. Thanks in advance.

General Discussion / Untapped Market
« on: April 26, 2016, 09:43:20 AM »
I wonder how great of an untapped market exists for scooters, especially the mid and large sized ones. I'm 51, and until I stumbled across my Xciting 250 and made an impulse purchase, I never even knew that scooters EXISTED other than the small "toys" I saw students riding to and from college campuses in my area. (Tallahassee, Florida). From what I see, there is ZERO marketing. And most people are just as ignorant as I was. My family was PETRIFIED when I told them that I had purchased a SCOOTER at all since we live in a rural area. And they thought I had lost my mind when I told them that I MIGHT ride it 50 miles to work. Why? Because they knew of the little scoot scoots they encountered which "old men and college students" rode which were "holding up traffic". It was not until they SAW it that their fears were calmed. Their reaction--- "OH, THAT'S MORE LIKE A MOTORCYCLE!". And my six siblings range in age from 56 to 64. My mother is 84. None of them had ever seen a larger scooter.

That's been the reaction of nearly EVERYONE who I have encountered. Even other SCOOTER OWNERS never knew that highway capable scooters existed.  Many now say that they want one too.

That leaves me to realize that the manufacturers and dealers are making a HUGE MISTAKE by depending ENTIRELY on word of mouth. Some well placed print and TV ads could potentially reach an untapped market and increase sales. Potential market---- anyone who wants to ride on two wheels, but finds a motorcycle to be intimidating. Those who live in rural areas and need something capable of 50+ mph. City dwellers who want something they can ride beyond the confines of 35 mph city streets. Those who want to ride , but just don't want to be "that guy" on the loud Harley.

Side note, kids think I'm "cool". And women see a guy who's just a LITTLE bit adventurous, but not a rebel😎😎

Just the ramblings of a middle aged man. Who until December 2015 had NEVER noticed a maxi or even a mid sized scooter. Bet and win, People, Grand vista, Xciting, Burgman, Reflex, Morpheus,  Helix, Or even the Chinese copies are Brand new words to me. And I don't live under a rock.

General Discussion / Saw a Burgman 650 for the first time.
« on: April 25, 2016, 03:06:51 AM »
On Thursday night while riding to kill time I saw a Burgman 650 executive for the first time. (Actually seeing the first maxi scooter of ANY kind other than my Own Xciting 250). The first thought that came to my mind was "Wow! This thing is HUGE!" My SECOND thought was "Wow! This thing is NICE! I want one!"

I didn't ride it. But the owner let me sit on it. And the seating position was very comfortable.
Then he told me how much he paid for it. He said that he paid $3900. And it's a 2008 model. And he was saying how good of a deal he got on it.

That's when I decided that my 2009 Kymco Xciting 250 is a nice bike after all. 😀😄

General Discussion / 2006 bet and win. What to offer?
« on: April 14, 2016, 10:35:13 PM »
There is a 2006 Bet and Win that has been sitting at my job for about 2 years according to those who've been there longer than I have. . I think they took it in as a partial down payment on a car. According to those who worked there at the time, it was running when it came in. But the battery died, and it's been sitting around back of the service department for most of that time. Rumor has it that they may want to get it off their hands.

It LOOKS to be in decent physical shape and has a top box on the back. Mechanical condition is a big unknown.

What is a reasonable offer to give them? I'll likely just load it on my truck and pay my local dealer to get it started. I know that right off the bat it will need a carb cleaning or replacement, fuel system cleaning, and a battery. So that needs to be factored in in addition to the overall uncertainty of the mechanical condition of the bike.

What should I offer knowing that there's a POSSIBILITY that it COULD be anything from a good second scooter to a bottomless money pit?
