Side By Side / Drag Plow
« on: February 11, 2020, 05:27:13 PM »
I'm starting a new thread rather than add to my tire chain thread where this topic was first raised

basic materials for this are a bunch of PT 12ft 2x6s don't ask me how many, I don't remember, they are somehting I keep on hand for projects
2 pieces of 2" on each side angle iron, the ruggeder the better, this is a wear item
1 ten ft length of 5/16 chain  nothing special I'm using a lower grade I got at Tractor supply for 19.95
bolts & washers etc.

this plow works excellent in light fluffy snow, heavier snow, not so well, I have to add weight, I have the material to build a deck, just havent done it yet

as you can see, it's an equal lateral triangle, cutting 12fters in half is basic shape  miters are cut at 30°/60°  the vertical post in front isn't any special height, I have a couple eye hooks for bungee cords attached to chains so that when slack, they don't drag (leaned the hard way sanding one in half)

you can see the angle iron cutting edges they are attached on the vertical side with 3 lag bolts each (make sure you have good drill bits to punch bolt holes thru the angle iron)

I have it attached with a snatch hook, I adjust the angle of snow casting by attaching at a different link on the snatch hook

General Discussion / K-Pipe

I was as my local dealer and they have a nearly new used one for cheap $$, I may even be able to barter for it.  Tell me about them,  my second motorcycle 45 years ago, was a Honda CB125S,  very similar specs, so 60mph top speed is known

I am intrigued by the "semi-automatic transmission"

Side By Side / Skid Plate discussion
« on: May 02, 2019, 04:43:00 PM »
used my 450i on a survey job that was logged for views, not merchantable timber, so they cut everything, thankfully, not chain saws, or the cuts on small stuff would have been angled into punji  sticks

mostly 12-15 inches tall, so they pretty much ripped off all my skid plates

dealer quoted me $225 for complete set of stock plastic with mounting bolts or $550, for aluminum

I am told plastic slides over rocks, etc better

is it worth the extra $$ for aluminum ?   pros & cons of each ?

Side By Side / Skid Plates for the UXV450i
« on: August 04, 2018, 06:56:00 PM »
I think I ripped up all the skid plates on mt 450i last week on a survey job, haven't looked hard, but I see and hear a lot of curled up plastic dragging.

I know one option is to but a new set and use it as a pattern to cut some out of sheet of plate metal, I would probably glue the oem plates to the metal plates and have the advantage of plastic that slides better over stuff with the strength of metal

but, I'm hoping someone has already done that and make a product I can just purchase and bolt on

Side By Side / My first tipover
« on: July 15, 2018, 07:34:25 PM »
Using the UXV450i as a log skidder, I fat footed the brake with a little or more like a lot of gas. Right rear wheel climbed up on a 2 foot tall boulder, bouncing into the air, and landing on my side

what did I learn besides being more careful backing up ?  the 450i doesn't have a tipover switch, it was still idling, I shut it off with the key

absolutely zero damage, flipped it back upright and continued on skidding logs

Side By Side / wheel offset
« on: September 05, 2017, 07:38:12 PM »
As I have posted before, most of the miles on my UXV450i are street miles, I bought a spare set of 12" wheels and a most street oriented tread, but they are still "off road" tires and DOT tires in 12" are rather expensive

been looking at 14"x7" wheels that I can buy regular car tires for and have found wheels with a 5+2 offset and 4+3 offset

I will be mounting 235/60R-14s, for $80/tire, I can get a tire with a 50,000 mile treadlife warranty

Side By Side / front hitch receiver
« on: January 02, 2017, 07:54:34 PM »
a front hitch receiver would make parking trailers and my Tow Hoe much easier, the turning radius with the 450i is so quick, that it is hard backing a trailer up

I see a few "universal" winch mount.receiver hitch combo's on e-gay, but wonder if they truly ar universal or may need modification

Side By Side / test of the chains in deep snow
« on: January 01, 2017, 06:23:07 PM »
a couple things came out of this trial
#1 I need a winch
#2 bring a shovel along

we had a8-12" base of snow before the 16" storm we got on the 28th and another 3" last night, snow cover is about 2½ feet

goes pretty good where I have a smooth trail

not so good where there are hidden obstacles to clearance

turning radius in 4wheel lock in a 3 foot deep snow drift is a bitch

Side By Side / tire chains
« on: December 08, 2016, 07:50:56 PM »
I've decided rather than buying yet another set of wheels to mount a set of tires with ice screws, it would be more cost effective to use tire chains for off road winter use

anybody use  tire chains, if so, type, size, sources?

Side By Side / snorkel kit or mod for 450i
« on: September 08, 2016, 06:24:59 PM »
I got into a pretty deep water crossing this past weekend, not problems other than getting stuck and pulling myself out with a block & tackle

had my dealer do a service yesterday that it was overdue for by about 100 miles, silt line in the engine compartment was only an inch or so from getting the air intake, screams at me " I want  snorkel"

Side By Side / Is there an easier way to adjust the suspension
« on: July 30, 2016, 05:06:59 PM »
I can get at the front shocks with a large pair of Channel Locks, the rear however has no swing room and the only way I can see to do it is with a punch and a hammer

I was surprised to open my tool kit and see no shock ring spanner, that I am used to finding on my other powersports toys that have a ring type preload adjustment

Side By Side / Trailer to haul the UXV 450
« on: July 17, 2016, 12:41:46 PM »
just wondering what people are using to haul the 450, as I've stated in other threads, I don't often have a reason to trailer my UXV and haven't  had to since I bought mine nearly a year ago, cause I have the ability to drive it on the street to any jobsite within 10 miles

Labor Day weekend, my brother has a large get together and plenty of ATV/SxS trails  about a 3 hour drive for me.

currently I am looking at trailers at Tractor Supply,  the 450 would fit on a 5x8, that I can get for $699 but looks like a cheesy trailer with a single beam tongue, right now, the 5½x10 with A frame tongue is on sale for $1099 or 6x8 for $899

does anyone use the 5x8?  is it worth it to get the extra 2 feet? that trailer also has cargo area in the A frame portion of the trailer as well
the 8 footers have 13" wheels and the 10 footer has 15" wheels

5x8or

6x8

5½x10
